Tips for Your Photographer Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to each niche
Employers hiring for commercial photographer roles want to see product and lifestyle work, not weddings. Pull a focused edit of 12 to 20 images that mirrors the specific genre in the job posting before you apply.
List your gear and software fluency
Hiring managers for staff photographer roles scan resumes for specific camera systems and editing tools. Name the exact bodies, lenses, and software you own and use daily rather than writing general terms like 'proficient in photography equipment.'
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists photographer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that match your lighting experience
Studio, natural light, and strobe work require different skills, and job descriptions often flag which they need. Matching your resume language to the lighting environment in the posting signals immediately that you can hit the ground running.
Bring a printed look book to interviews
A curated set of physical prints leaves a stronger impression than a tablet slideshow in creative interviews, especially for commercial and editorial roles. Choose eight to ten images that show range within the genre, not your entire archive.
Negotiate usage rights and licensing terms
Full-time photographer offers sometimes include clauses that assign all intellectual property to the employer. Before accepting, clarify whether you retain the right to use images in your portfolio, because that affects your long-term career leverage.
Photographer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most photographers?
The companies hiring the most photographers right now include Nexstar Media Group, Fox News Network, and Zillow, with the largest share of openings in Texas, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Media companies, healthcare systems, and e-commerce retailers consistently account for a large portion of staff photographer demand.
How many photographer jobs are remote?
About 11% of photographer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other creative roles because most photography work requires a physical presence. Sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility include photo editing, retouching, and photo production coordination, where the core work happens after the shoot.
How do you become a photographer?
Start by learning manual camera controls and understanding exposure, composition, and lighting through practice and self-study. Build a focused portfolio in one or two genres, then assist or second-shoot with working photographers to gain on-set experience. Develop proficiency in post-production editing, seek feedback on your work consistently, and apply to entry-level or assistant roles to transition into paid employment.
How do you get hired as a photographer with little experience?
Focus on building a tight portfolio in a specific genre rather than showing a broad mix of unrelated work. Offer to shoot for nonprofits, small businesses, or community events to create real-world samples. Apply for photographer assistant and second-shooter roles, which are designed for candidates without deep independent experience, and emphasize your technical knowledge of equipment and editing software in your resume.
What does the photographer interview process look like?
Most photographer interviews begin with a portfolio review where the hiring manager asks you to walk through your creative decisions on specific images. A technical conversation about your gear, lighting setup preferences, and editing workflow typically follows. Some employers include a paid or unpaid test shoot to evaluate how you perform on location or in a studio before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to photographer jobs?
You can find and apply to photographer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to each listing that fits.
