About the Role
Snail Games USA is seeking a Senior Technical Artist to join our Art Center and provide hands-on technical art support across multiple Unreal Engine projects.
This is a broad production-focused Technical Artist role working between art and engineering to solve technical problems, improve workflows, and help teams deliver high-quality game content efficiently. The role will have a particular emphasis on Unreal Engine rendering, materials, and shaders, but responsibilities may shift based on project and production needs.
The ideal candidate has strong technical-art fundamentals and enough breadth to work across asset integration, optimization, tooling, pipelines, troubleshooting, and visual systems. They should be comfortable investigating ambiguous problems, collaborating directly with artists and engineers, and carrying solutions through implementation and validation.
Responsibilities
Provide hands-on technical art support across a range of game development and production needs.
Develop, maintain, and optimize Unreal Engine materials, shaders, and rendering workflows.
Investigate and resolve visual, technical, performance, and asset integration problems.
Integrate art assets and ensure they meet visual, technical, and runtime requirements.
Profile and optimize content for rendering performance, memory use, shader complexity, and scalability.
Establish and maintain practical standards for assets, materials, textures, meshes, LODs, collision, naming, and project organization.
Develop or improve tools and workflows that increase artist efficiency and reduce repetitive production work.
Support artists with technical setup, debugging, implementation, and optimization.
Work with Art, Engineering, Design, Animation, Lighting, and other disciplines to solve cross-discipline production problems.
Evaluate workflows and identify technical risks or production bottlenecks before they become larger problems.
Review assets and implementation for technical quality, consistency, and performance.
Create documentation, examples, and reusable best practices for distributed development teams.
Adapt to different technical-art needs as project priorities and production requirements change.
Take ownership of technical-art problems from investigation through implementation, testing, and validation.
Minimum Requirements
Professional Technical Artist experience in game development.
Strong Unreal Engine experience, preferably UE5.
Strong general knowledge of real-time game art pipelines and technical-art production.
Strong experience with Unreal materials, shaders, rendering, or related visual systems.
Understanding of real-time rendering, profiling, optimization, and performance constraints.
Experience with game asset pipelines including meshes, textures, materials, LODs, collision, and asset organization.
Experience integrating and troubleshooting production assets in-engine.
Demonstrated ability to solve problems spanning both artistic and technical concerns.
Ability to independently investigate unfamiliar problems and develop practical production solutions.
Strong communication skills and experience collaborating directly with artists and engineers.
Ability to balance visual quality, production efficiency, technical constraints, and runtime performance.
Nice to Have
Python scripting or pipeline automation experience.
Unreal Blueprint experience.
HLSL or custom shader development experience.
Experience with procedural tools such as Houdini.
Experience with environment, character, vegetation, VFX, lighting, or procedural content pipelines.
Experience building reusable tools or workflows for artists.
Experience with DCC pipeline integration such as Maya, Blender, Substance, or similar tools.
Experience shipping PC or console titles using Unreal Engine.
Experience supporting multiple projects or production teams.
Salary Range
100,000-130,000 annually
Compensation within the range will depend on experience, technical breadth, demonstrated production ownership, and location.

Tips for Your Technical Artist Job Search
Tailor your resume to pipeline specificity
Hiring managers for technical artist roles care about which DCCs, game engines, and scripting languages you've used in production. Name them explicitly: Python, MEL, Houdini, Unreal, Unity. Vague phrases like 'proficient in 3D tools' won't pass an ATS screen.
Show your reel and your code
A technical artist portfolio needs both visual output and the tools behind it. Link to your GitHub or a repository showing shaders, rigs, or pipeline scripts alongside your demo reel. Recruiters and art directors both review your submission, so give each what they need.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists technical artist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by engine to target your specialty
A technical artist role at a mobile studio using Unity differs substantially from one at an AAA studio on Unreal Engine 5. When searching, filter or read job descriptions for the specific engine so your application speaks directly to the tools you'll use on day one.
Prepare to whiteboard a shader or tool problem
Many technical artist interviews include a live problem-solving stage where you're asked to prototype a shader, debug a rig, or design a pipeline step. Practice narrating your decisions out loud while you work, not just producing the solution silently.
Negotiate using scope not just title
Technical artist offers vary widely based on whether the role owns pipeline decisions or executes them. Before accepting, clarify your ownership of tools, your access to art directors versus engineers, and your scope across shipped titles. These factors affect your growth more than level alone.
Technical Artist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most technical artists?
Riot Games, Riot Games, and Epic Games are hiring the most technical artists right now, with openings concentrated in California, North Carolina, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is particularly active at studios with titles in active development or live-service games.
How many technical artist jobs are remote?
About 33% of technical artist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which is higher than many production roles because the work is tool- and software-driven rather than tied to physical sets or hardware. Pipeline and shader-focused specializations tend to have the most remote flexibility, while rigging and real-time VFX roles more often require on-site collaboration.
How do you become a technical artist?
Most technical artists build their skills through a combination of a degree in computer science, game development, or fine arts, followed by self-directed study in scripting and real-time rendering. Start by learning a major game engine and a DCC tool like Maya or Houdini, then write small pipeline scripts to automate repetitive art tasks. Contributing to open-source game projects or building a personal reel that shows both visual and technical output is what gets you noticed when applying.
Can you get hired as a technical artist with little experience?
Yes, studios do hire junior technical artists, but your portfolio carries more weight than your work history at that stage. Build and share a small tool that solves a real production problem, such as a batch exporter, a shader graph, or an automated LOD generator. Applying to mid-size studios and mobile game companies is often more effective than targeting AAA studios, because smaller teams need generalists who can contribute across disciplines from day one.
What does the technical artist interview process look like?
The technical artist interview process typically includes an initial screening call with a recruiter, a portfolio review with an art director or lead technical artist, and at least one technical assessment. That assessment often asks you to debug a shader, write a pipeline script, or solve an optimization problem live or as a take-home exercise. Final rounds usually involve a conversation with the engineering team to evaluate how well you can work across the art and tech boundary.
Where can I find and apply to technical artist jobs?
You can find and apply to technical artist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from studios and companies across the United States. Search for roles that match your engine experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing that fits. The listings cover a range of levels and industries, from games and film to enterprise software and XR.
