Tips for Your Newscast Director Job Search
Tailor your reel to live production
Hiring teams for newscast director roles watch your reel before reading your resume. Lead with your strongest live broadcast sequences, not pre-produced packages. Show how you called shots under deadline pressure, and keep the total runtime under three minutes.
List your switcher and rundown software
Employers scan resumes for specific tools: Ross Overdrive, Sony ELC, iNews, ENPS, Avid iNEWS. Name every production automation and rundown system you've operated. Vague references to 'broadcast software' cost you interviews that a precise equipment list would win.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists newscast director openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by market size before applying
News directors in top-25 markets expect candidates with experience calling shots in comparable markets. Applying upmarket without that background rarely succeeds. Target openings one or two market tiers above your current one for the strongest return on your applications.
Prepare to direct a mock newscast in interviews
Many stations give finalists a live or simulated newscast to direct during the interview process. Practice calling camera and graphic cues aloud, handling a breaking-news script drop mid-show, and coordinating with a floor director you've never met.
Negotiate your technical rider, not just salary
When an offer arrives, confirm which production systems you'll be using, whether capital upgrades are budgeted, and what your staffing complement looks like. Mismatches between your workflow and the station's infrastructure create friction that's harder to resolve after you've accepted.
Newscast Director Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How many newscast director jobs are remote?
About 0% of newscast director openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on, control-room nature of most directing roles. The sub-areas most compatible with remote work include digital-only newscasts, streaming news channels, and production coordination roles that don't require real-time in-studio shot-calling.
How do you become a newscast director?
Most newscast directors start as production assistants or technical directors, learning the control room from the ground up before stepping into a directing role. Building fluency with production automation systems, rundown software, and live broadcast workflows is essential. Volunteering to direct lower-stakes newscasts, such as weekend or overnight shows, gives you the on-air reps stations expect before promoting you to a primary newscast.
Can you get hired as a newscast director without much experience?
Entry points exist, but they're almost always in smaller markets or at digital-first news outlets with leaner production teams. Stations in smaller markets are more willing to hire candidates with strong technical fundamentals and a short directing reel over candidates with years of experience in larger markets. Focusing your applications on those markets, demonstrating comfort with the specific automation systems a station uses, and showing you can stay calm during breaking news gives you a real path in.
What does the newscast director interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen from a news director or HR contact, followed by a video interview focused on your experience calling live shots and handling breaking news. Finalists are often brought on-site or given a remote simulation where they direct a mock newscast, sometimes with an unfamiliar crew and a script they've only seen minutes before. References from producers and technical directors who've worked with you carry significant weight in the final decision.
Where can I find and apply to newscast director jobs?
