Tips for Your Stage Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to production type
Theater, film, and live events stage managers use different workflows and terminology. List production types separately and lead with the format most relevant to each job posting so hiring managers immediately see the match.
Document your prompt book samples
Many stage manager postings ask for evidence of organizational systems. Prepare a clean, redacted prompt book sample or cue sheet excerpt you can share digitally. Concrete artifacts set you apart from candidates who only describe their process.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists stage manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by production scale
A regional LORT theater and a touring Broadway production expect very different experience levels. Read casting and crew postings carefully for Equity or non-Equity designation, company size, and run length before applying so your application speaks directly to their needs.
Prepare your calling script for interviews
Interviewers in live performance frequently ask you to walk through a cue sequence or describe how you called a complex scene change. Practice narrating a specific show's calling process out loud so your answer is crisp, technical, and confident.
Follow up with a production-specific note
After an interview, reference one logistical challenge from the company's current or upcoming season in your follow-up. It signals genuine research into their work and reinforces that you think in production terms, not just general stage management principles.
Stage Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most stage managers?
The companies hiring the most stage managers right now include State Farm, KPMG, and State Street, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Production volume, touring schedules, and regional theater seasons drive most of the hiring activity.
How many stage manager jobs are remote?
About 6% of stage manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low relative to most roles because the work is inherently on-site. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility are production coordination, scheduling, and pre-production documentation work for film and television projects.
How do you become a stage manager?
Start by assisting on productions at a college, community theater, or local venue to build prompt book and calling experience. Pursue a degree or conservatory training in theater or stage management to develop technical vocabulary. Then work up from assistant stage manager roles on small productions, accumulating credits across multiple formats before targeting larger companies.
Can you get hired as a stage manager with little experience?
Yes, entry-level assistant stage manager roles are a common starting point for candidates with limited credits. Focus on community theater, student productions, or fringe festivals to build a real production list. A strong prompt book sample, a clear grasp of calling conventions, and demonstrated organizational skills matter more to many smaller companies than years of experience.
What does the stage manager interview process look like?
Most stage manager interviews begin with a phone or video screen covering your production background and organizational approach. A second round typically involves a practical discussion where you walk through how you managed a specific show, including rehearsal scheduling, calling cues, and managing the production team. Some employers ask for a prompt book sample or references from directors you have worked with directly.
Where can I find and apply to stage manager jobs?
You can find and apply to stage manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and production background, and apply directly to each one that fits.
