Job Summary
The Writer is an integral part of the university’s Communications Team, finding and telling the stories of our students, faculty, staff, leadership and alumni for Reporter (our twice-weekly faculty/staff e-news) and our News site, as well as for specific departments and units. Our approach is journalistic and story-centered. We welcome applications from like-minded writers, with clips to demonstrate. The Writer will report to the Director of Communications and be part of a team of committed and creative professionals: a Senior Writer/Managing Editor, a Digital Media Manager and a Photographer. The Communications Team is part of the Office of External Relations, which also includes the Marketing, Web Services and Government Relations teams. All teams collaborate closely with one another.
The Writer must have demonstrated talents for producing high-quality written work on deadline, gathering complex information and translating it clearly and accurately for a variety of audiences, synthesizing feedback from multiple sources, and producing content that is engaging, easily understood and can be used across platforms. A successful candidate will be self-motivated, curious, flexible, versatile, highly collaborative, deadline- and detail-oriented, and an excellent time manager.
This position covers the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Education, Health and Human Services, in addition to general university news. Accordingly, we are especially interested in hearing from writers who are well-versed in faculty research, engineering, computer science, health and human services, and/or education, while also able to cover other topics. Writers who demonstrate an ability to quickly learn about these areas will also make strong candidates. Professional journalism experience and/or experience storytelling for higher education strongly preferred.

Tips for Your Writer Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to the format
Employers scan portfolios fast, so lead with three to five samples that match the exact format the job requires. A content writer role wants long-form articles. A copywriting role wants ads or landing pages. Mixing formats without context loses hiring managers quickly.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists writer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing. Applying within the first few days of a posting consistently improves your chances of reaching the review stage.
Show your editing judgment on your resume
Most writer resumes list topics covered but skip the results. Name the CMS or style guide you worked in, whether you edited your own work to a house style, and any measurable outcome tied to your writing, like audience growth or published volume.
Filter openings by the tool stack listed
Writer job listings increasingly name specific tools: WordPress, Contentful, HubSpot, or a particular style guide. Prioritize roles where you already know the stack. When you don't, name a comparable tool in your application to show transferable fluency.
Prepare a writing test sample in advance
Many writer hiring processes include a paid or unpaid writing test. Practice writing 300 to 500 words on a general industry topic in under an hour before you start applying. Having a ready workflow prevents a timed test from derailing an otherwise strong candidacy.
Negotiate scope, not just compensation
When you reach the offer stage, clarify the ownership of your work, editorial approval layers, and revision expectations before accepting. These details affect your day-to-day experience as much as pay does and are often negotiable at the offer stage.
Writer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most writers?
The companies hiring the most writers right now include Infusemedia, Writer, and Collabera, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in media, technology, and healthcare organizations that maintain ongoing content programs.
How many writer jobs are remote?
About 33% of writer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making writing one of the more location-flexible professional roles available. Content writing and copywriting positions tend to be the most remote-friendly, while technical writing roles tied to product teams or regulated industries are more likely to require occasional on-site presence.
How do you become a writer?
Start by building a portfolio of published or self-published work in the format you want to be hired for, whether that is articles, copy, scripts, or technical documentation. Study and apply a recognized style guide consistently. Seek feedback from editors or peers, then apply to entry-level or contract roles that match your existing samples and grow your range from there.
Can you get hired as a writer with little or no experience?
Yes, employers do hire writers without a long work history when the portfolio demonstrates clear, clean writing in the relevant format. Build samples by contributing to a publication, running a newsletter, or producing spec work for a fictional brief. Entry-level content and copywriting roles are the most accessible starting points, and contract or freelance assignments often lead directly to staff positions.
What does the writer interview process look like?
Most writer hiring processes include a portfolio review, a phone or video screen focused on your writing background and process, and a writing test or editing exercise. Some employers run a second interview to discuss the test results or meet the broader team. Technical writing roles may also include a documentation review or a walkthrough of how you explain a complex concept to a general audience.
Where can I find and apply to writer jobs?
You can find and apply to writer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits. New postings are added regularly, so checking back often gives you the best shot at catching fresh openings.
