Tips for Your Technical Writer Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to the industry
Hiring managers in software want to see API docs or developer guides, while those in medical devices expect regulatory or IFU samples. Match your three to five portfolio pieces to the industry vertical you're targeting before you apply.
Show the tools, not just the output
List your specific authoring and publishing tools, MadCap Flare, DITA-based XML, Confluence, Oxygen, or Docs-as-Code workflows, prominently on your resume. Many applicant tracking systems filter for tool names before a human ever reads your file.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists technical writer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by documentation type
Search for the specific output you want to write, such as API reference, user guides, or release notes, rather than just job title. Roles with those terms in the description are more likely to match your actual day-to-day work and let you speak precisely in your cover letter.
Prepare a writing test sample in advance
Most technical writer interviews include a timed or take-home writing exercise. Practice converting a dense, jargon-heavy source doc into a clean, numbered procedure before your first screen. Reviewers notice candidates who structure steps, add context, and trim redundancy instinctively.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate salary
In your offer conversation, clarify whether you own the style guide, whether you manage the doc site, and how closely you'll work with SMEs. Scope directly affects workload and career growth, and asking those questions signals seniority to the hiring team.
Technical Writer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most technical writers?
The companies hiring the most technical writers right now include Collabera, Infojini, and Artech, with the largest share of openings in California, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Technology, healthcare, and defense contractors consistently account for the highest volume of postings.
How many technical writer jobs are remote?
About 16% of technical writer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible roles in professional writing. API documentation and software user guide positions tend to be the most remote-friendly, while roles tied to hardware, manufacturing, or regulated lab environments more often require on-site presence.
How do you become a technical writer?
Start by building a portfolio of writing samples that demonstrate you can explain a technical process clearly. A degree in English, communications, or a technical field helps, but employers weight your samples most heavily. Learn at least one industry-standard authoring tool, practice structured writing principles, and look for your first role in a field where you already have subject-matter familiarity.
Can you get hired as a technical writer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level technical writer roles exist, and a strong portfolio carries more weight than years of experience. Create samples by documenting an open-source project, writing a how-to guide for a software tool you know well, or rewriting a confusing public manual. Emphasize any experience translating complex information, whether from teaching, customer support, or academic writing.
What does the technical writer interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include an initial recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation about your background and samples, and a writing exercise, either timed during the interview or completed as a take-home assignment. Some employers add a panel interview with engineers or product managers to assess how you work with subject-matter experts. Final rounds often include a portfolio review with the team.
Where can I find and apply to technical writer jobs?
You can find and apply to technical writer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, documentation specialty, and preferred industry, then apply directly to each one that fits.
