Entry Level Technical Writer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level technical writer job?
Employers hiring at the entry level look for writing samples above almost everything else, so build a portfolio before you apply. Student projects, open-source documentation contributions, or a personal technical blog all count. Familiarity with tools like Markdown, Confluence, or MadCap Flare gives you an edge, and a degree in English, communications, or a technical field helps, though strong samples can offset a different background.
Which companies hire entry level technical writers?
Companies hiring entry level technical writers right now include Collabera, BioMarin Pharmaceutical, and Medpace, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. At this level, hiring comes from a wide range of employers, including software companies, hardware manufacturers, healthcare technology firms, and defense contractors that need clear documentation for complex products.
Are there remote entry level technical writer jobs?
Yes, though remote availability varies by employer and industry. About 20% of entry level technical writer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, making this one of the more flexible fields for early-career candidates. On-site roles still exist, particularly at companies where writers collaborate closely with engineering or product teams.
Are these new grad technical writer jobs?
Yes, the listings here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior roles alongside other entry level postings. A new grad friendly posting typically welcomes zero to two years of experience, accepts internship work or a portfolio in place of full-time history, and does not require industry-specific credentials. Look for language like "recent graduates encouraged" or "entry level" in the job description.
Which industries hire the most entry level technical writers?
Entry Level technical writer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Those sectors generate high documentation demand because their products, software, and regulated processes require clear user guides, API references, and compliance materials that need writers at every experience level.
