The Technical Writer performs a variety of technical writing and documentation duties in support of mission-critical software and systems engineering, cyber initiatives, and analytics programs. The Technical Writer assists engineering and development teams with a full range of documentation tasks for various programs ranging from standard installation guides to complex cryptologic and analytic tradecraft methodologies. This role demands an ability to work across all phases of documentation, providing critical coordination and support for technical personnel, engineers, and subject matter experts.
Tasks:
- Responsible for the preparation, review, revision, and maintenance of technical documents including software and systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation.
- Write and edit technical documentation for all of the project’s hardware and software to include installation, configuration and how-to documentation.
- Create code documentation for software; produce implementation guides and end-user guides for capabilities.
- Provide field, data definition, and data flow documentation and format technical publications from pamphlets, technical drawings, and consultations with technical personnel and other available resources.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining operations documentation, user guides and manuals and technical publications.
- Gather technical information and prepare written text.
- Maintain a current internal documentation library.
- Use multiple word processing and presentation tools such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and Visio etc.
- Work with developers to produce quality documentation and training materials.
- Work on all phases of documentation.
- Understand basic concepts (to include basic grammar concepts), and write technical copy for various types of documents for a program/project of similar complexity.
- Prepare reports, responses, and briefings targeted to a wide range of audiences.
- Coordinate layout and design of documents.
- Research highly technical subject matter, organize information from multiple sources, and express technical information in written form that is comprehensible to a wide audience of readers.
- Apply concepts for technical writing based on engineering drawings, technical information from engineering documentation, consultations with engineers and subject matter experts, and other available sources.
- Produce defense acquisition documentation, user manuals, training manuals, and other documentation utilized by the end-user community of DoD electronic equipment and systems.
- Interpret engineering and maintenance drawings, operational procedures to understand and blend large quantities of computer related information.
- Produce technical documentation for Cryptologic programs or projects developing analytic tradecraft methodologies.
- Create, update and monitor SharePoint, Confluence, and/or similar technology tools.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in a Technical OR Business-related discipline from an accredited college or university AND Target six (6) years of experience as a Technical Writer on programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
OR
Target ten (10) years of experience as a Technical Writer on programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity (substituting four (4) years of additional technical writing experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree).
Clearance: TS/SCI w/Polygraph (Full Scope preferred)
Due to the nature of the work and clearance requirements, this position is 100% on-site in a secure facility in the Annapolis Junction / Hanover, MD area.
Desired Skill Set:
- Demonstrated knowledge of and formatting compliance with NSA Data Standard (DS-89) guidelines.
- Demonstrated experience with content layout, taxonomy creation, and continuous maintenance within Atlassian Confluence and Microsoft SharePoint repositories.
- Hands-on proficiency drafting complex data flows, network topologies, or system architectures using diagramming software like MS Visio or Draw.io.
- Basic familiarity with Git, GitHub, or Markdown formatting languages to support engineering teams with inline code documentation reviews.
