Responsibilities
The Surgical Services Attendant Aide assists the nursing staff with delegated tasks of indirect and direct patient care which support and complement nursing practice under the supervision of a registered nurse in the operating room arena.
- Cleans and maintains assigned items and areas to facilitate smooth daily operations. Cleaning duties account for 80% of this position's responsibilities.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment in the surgical department/suites following Joint Commission and AORN/Infection control guidelines.
- Works closely with the nursing staff, scrub techs, Nurse Anesthetist, Surgeon, and Anesthesiologist, as needed.
- Must be flexible to changing priorities and handle changing workflows.
- Participate in Commitment to Safety by providing and collecting data to improve patient/staff safety and OR efficiencies.
- Actively participates as a member of the patient care team maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
- Perform job duties to support patient care under the direction of nursing staff and able to function independently to complete assigned tasks.
- Serves as courier for the surgical department i.e. obtaining and returning blood products, obtaining beds for patient transfer, and transports specimens to the lab in compliance with The College of American Pathologists and The Joint Commission guidelines.
- Assist circulator nurse, surgical team, and physician, with patient positioning, and providing patient dignity and privacy during transport, and transfer, if needed.
Qualifications
Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.
- High school diploma or GED-must be verifiable.
- Demonstrate age-related competency by completion of required education and post-test.
- Demonstrate appropriate working knowledge of specialty equipment.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient-care setting.
- Strong communication and computer skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and general hospital/clinic procedures preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
