Oncology Social Worker Jobs in Birmingham: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a oncology social worker job in Birmingham?
Birmingham's oncology social work market centers on the UAB Medical District, where academic health systems, NCI-designated cancer programs, and affiliated outpatient clinics post the most openings. Candidates with oncology-specific field placements, experience in palliative or hospice care, and familiarity with the patient populations served by Birmingham's community health networks have a clear edge. Targeting roles at larger health systems first, then exploring hospice and home health organizations in the broader metro, gives the strongest foothold.
Which companies hire oncology social workers in Birmingham?
Birmingham oncology social worker roles are posted by UAB Medicine, Baptist Health, and Grandview Medical Center and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring employers in Birmingham range from large academic medical centers and NCI-affiliated cancer institutes to community hospital networks and nonprofit hospice organizations serving the greater metro area.
Are there remote oncology social worker jobs in Birmingham?
Yes, though remote availability is limited given the hands-on, patient-facing nature of most oncology social work. About 100% of oncology social worker openings tied to Birmingham are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, primarily in care coordination, telehealth counseling, and utilization review roles rather than direct bedside or infusion center positions.
How can I get a oncology social worker job in Birmingham with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Birmingham is securing a field placement or internship at UAB Hospital or one of its affiliated cancer clinics, where MSW students frequently convert to staff roles after graduation. Hospice organizations and community health nonprofits in Birmingham also hire new graduates for patient navigator and care coordinator positions that build directly toward oncology social work. Highlighting any oncology rotation, grief counseling training, or experience with underserved populations strengthens an application significantly in this market.
