Commercial Lead Jobs for OPT Students
Commercial Lead jobs on OPT require employers to file an H-1B or facilitate visa sponsorship before your 12-month standard OPT window closes. STEM OPT extension isn't typically available for purely commercial roles unless your degree is in a qualifying field. Most hiring happens at mid-market and enterprise companies with established sponsorship pipelines.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Commercial Lead
Target companies with active sponsorship history
Search OFLC disclosure data to identify employers who have sponsored commercial roles before. Companies that have filed LCAs for Commercial Lead or Business Development titles are far more likely to sponsor again than those with no record.
Lead with revenue impact in your application
Commercial Lead roles are evaluated on pipeline ownership and deal outcomes. Quantify your results: contracts closed, revenue generated, or growth percentages. Hiring managers sponsoring OPT candidates want proof the hire justifies the legal overhead.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for OPT-friendly employers
Migrate Mate surfaces Commercial Lead roles specifically from employers open to OPT work authorization. Browsing there saves weeks of manual outreach to companies that would screen you out due to visa requirements before ever reviewing your resume.
Frame your international background as a commercial asset
Many Commercial Lead roles involve global accounts, cross-border deals, or international market expansion. Your multicultural fluency and language skills can be a genuine differentiator worth highlighting explicitly in cover letters and interviews.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Commercial Lead on OPT?
Yes, as long as your Commercial Lead role is directly related to your degree field. OPT requires employment in a position that aligns with your major. If your degree is in business, marketing, economics, or a related field, a Commercial Lead role typically satisfies that requirement. You'll need a valid EAD card before starting work.
Do Commercial Lead jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Not automatically. STEM OPT extension requires your degree to be in a STEM-designated field and your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. A Commercial Lead role itself isn't a STEM occupation, but if your degree is in a qualifying STEM field such as data science or computer science and you apply it meaningfully in the role, your DSO may approve the extension. Confirm with your international student office before relying on this pathway.
How do I find Commercial Lead employers willing to sponsor OPT?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to OPT work authorization, which cuts out the time spent applying to roles that will screen you out on visa status alone. Beyond that, OFLC disclosure data shows which companies have filed Labor Condition Applications for commercial and business development roles historically, giving you a concrete list of sponsorship-friendly employers to prioritize.
What happens to my Commercial Lead job if my OPT expires before H-1B approval?
If your OPT expires and your H-1B hasn't been approved, you lose work authorization and must stop working immediately. The critical buffer is the cap-gap provision: if your employer files your H-1B petition before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap extends your authorization through September 30. Coordinating your employer's filing timeline with your OPT end date is essential.
Is a Commercial Lead role considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. H-1B requires the position to be a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. A Commercial Lead tied to a business, finance, or marketing degree can qualify, but vaguely defined roles without a clear degree requirement are at higher risk of USCIS scrutiny. Work with your employer's immigration attorney to craft a job description that meets the specialty occupation standard.
