Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Medical Physicist
Lead with your CAMPEP credentials
Employers hiring medical physicists understand the credential pipeline. Listing your CAMPEP-accredited program and any ABR board eligibility upfront signals you meet the baseline, and makes OPT sponsorship feel like a smaller ask.
Target academic medical centers first
University-affiliated hospitals and cancer centers hire medical physicists regularly and have established HR processes for sponsoring international staff. They're more likely to convert OPT to H-1B visa than independent outpatient clinics or smaller practices.
Apply during your clinical residency search
CAMPEP residencies are accredited training positions, not casual jobs. Applying during the match cycle signals long-term commitment to the field and gives employers a structured timeline to plan OPT and future visa sponsorship around.
Clarify your OPT end date in writing
Medical physicist hiring timelines run long due to credentialing. Share your exact OPT expiration date early so employers can confirm whether your authorization covers onboarding, licensing, and any required medical physics residency start dates.
Emphasize STEM OPT extension eligibility
Medical physics graduate programs typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirming this in applications gives employers up to three years to evaluate you before committing to H-1B sponsorship, which meaningfully lowers their perceived risk.
Prepare documentation before interviews
Have your EAD card, I-20 with OPT authorization, and STEM OPT eligibility confirmation ready before the first interview. Hospital HR departments move slowly, arriving prepared prevents delays and shows you understand the compliance requirements of your own status.
Medical Physicist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Medical Physicist on OPT?
Yes, a medical physics degree is a STEM-designated field, so you're eligible for both the standard 12-month OPT period and the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years total. Your employment must be directly related to your degree program, which medical physicist roles clearly satisfy given the specialty-specific training required.
Do Medical Physicist employers typically sponsor visas after OPT?
Academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer centers, and large hospital systems regularly sponsor H-1B visas for medical physicists because the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a specific graduate-level degree. Smaller outpatient or private-practice settings are less consistent. Focusing your search on institutions with established international hiring programs improves your sponsorship prospects significantly. Migrate Mate filters specifically for OPT-friendly and sponsoring employers in this field.
Does a medical physics residency count as valid OPT employment?
Yes, an accredited CAMPEP residency is considered qualifying employment for OPT purposes as long as it's a paid position directly related to your degree. Unpaid residencies do not count toward OPT employment requirements. Confirm the compensation structure with your program coordinator before accepting, and report the position to your DSO promptly to keep your SEVIS record current.
What happens if my OPT expires before I finish a medical physics residency?
If your OPT period ends mid-residency, you'll need another work authorization status to continue. Options include H-1B sponsorship by the residency program, a J-1 visa exchange visitor visa if the program qualifies, or a cap-exempt H-1B through a university-affiliated hospital. Plan at least six months ahead, medical physics residency programs can initiate sponsorship early if you flag the timeline during the match process.
How do I find Medical Physicist jobs that sponsor OPT or H-1B?
Standard job boards rarely disclose visa sponsorship policies upfront, which wastes time during a period when your authorization timeline matters. Migrate Mate is built specifically for OPT and visa-sponsored roles, so you can filter directly for Medical Physicist positions at employers who have a track record of sponsoring international candidates rather than discovering that information only after multiple interview rounds.
