How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Practice Manager
Highlight your degree alignment clearly
OPT authorization requires your job to be directly related to your major. In your resume and cover letter, explicitly connect your healthcare administration or business degree to the operational, compliance, and financial responsibilities of the Practice Manager role.
Ask about sponsorship before the final interview
Raise the H-1B question during the second-round interview, not the offer stage. Framing it as forward planning rather than a demand gives the employer time to consult HR and shows you are thinking about long-term commitment to the organization.
Quantify your operational impact on your resume
Practice Managers are evaluated on efficiency and outcomes. Metrics like reduced patient wait times, improved billing collection rates, or staff retention improvements make your application stronger and demonstrate the measurable value that justifies sponsorship investment.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Practice Manager role qualify for F-1 OPT work authorization?
Yes, as long as the position is directly related to your degree. A Practice Manager role typically qualifies for students with degrees in healthcare administration, health services management, business administration, or a related field. USCIS requires that your employment be directly tied to your major area of study, so be specific when describing the connection in your offer letter and DSO reporting.
How do I find Practice Manager jobs that are open to OPT students?
Browse Migrate Mate to find Practice Manager roles at employers who have a track record of hiring international candidates. Filtering for OPT-friendly employers saves time and reduces the frustration of applying to positions where sponsorship is a non-starter. Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 students navigating work authorization, so the jobs listed are curated with that audience in mind.
Can I work as a Practice Manager under STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, typically degrees in health informatics, management information systems, or certain business analytics programs, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. You will also need to work for an E-Verify enrolled employer and have a formal training plan on file with your DSO.
What should I do if a Practice Manager employer says they don't sponsor visas?
Clarify whether they mean H-1B sponsorship specifically or all work authorization, since many employers confuse the two. OPT does not require employer sponsorship, you arrive with work authorization already granted. If they are open to OPT but not H-1B, you can still gain valuable experience during your OPT period while continuing to pursue employers willing to sponsor the H-1B transition.
How soon should I start tracking my OPT employment as a Practice Manager?
Report your employer and job details to your DSO within ten days of starting work. Practice Manager roles are full-time positions, so unemployment tracking under OPT is relevant, you have a cumulative 90-day unemployment limit during standard OPT. Keeping your DSO updated and maintaining documentation of your employment dates protects your status and simplifies future immigration filings.
