Photographer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a photographer in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a photographer. Most employers look for a portfolio demonstrating relevant work, and many prefer candidates with an associate or bachelor's degree in photography, visual arts, or a related field from a Texas institution such as UT Austin, Texas State University, or the Art Institute of Dallas. Commercial and corporate roles often expect Adobe suite proficiency alongside hands-on shooting experience.
How much do photographers make in Texas?
Photographers in Texas earn a median of about $41,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $24,910 for the lowest 10% to over $62,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire photographers in Texas?
Employers hiring photographers in Texas right now include Nexstar Media Group, North Central Texas Council of Governments, and Dallas Baptist University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large corporate headquarters, healthcare networks, and media companies sustain steady in-house photography demand beyond project-based or freelance work.
Which Texas cities have the most photographer jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Arlington have the most photographer openings in Texas. Houston's energy sector and sprawling medical complex drive commercial and corporate demand, Dallas anchors advertising agency and retail brand work, and Austin's tech industry and live events scene consistently generate both staff and contract photography roles.
Are there remote photographer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 5% of photographer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most photography work. The roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are post-production editing, photo retouching, and digital asset management positions where all deliverables are handled in software rather than on location.
How can I get hired as a photographer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is assisting an established commercial or portrait studio, where you build technical skills and a portfolio simultaneously. Large Texas healthcare systems such as Houston Methodist and UT Southwestern hire entry-level marketing photographers for internal content teams with no prior corporate experience required. Starting as a photo editor, retoucher, or production assistant at a Dallas or Houston agency is another common first step before moving into a full shooting role.
Where can I find and apply to photographer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to photographer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
