Job Description:
Are you ready to shape the future of AI-powered infrastructure? Hitachi Energy is expanding its Grid Solutions team and seeking a Principal Power Systems Architect to lead the electrical design of next-generation hyperscale AI data centers.
This is a unique opportunity to become the technical authority behind some of the world's most advanced and energy-intensive facilities. In this role, you will own the end-to-end electrical architecture, from high-voltage utility interconnections and transmission systems through medium- and low-voltage distribution networks to rack-level power delivery. You will help define the future of data center electrification by driving innovative, reliable, and scalable solutions that support the rapidly growing demands of artificial intelligence.
Working alongside a team of specialist engineers, you'll guide complex technical studies, influence critical design decisions, and collaborate with utilities, grid operators, EPCs, OEMs, and industry stakeholders. Your expertise will help ensure resilient, compliant, and efficient power systems that enable the next generation of digital infrastructure.
If you are passionate about power systems engineering, large-scale infrastructure, and solving complex technical challenges while leading high-impact projects, this role offers the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the energy transition and the future of AI.
How You'll Make an Impact
- Lead the electrical architecture of hyperscale AI data center campuses from grid connection to rack-level power.
- Direct multidisciplinary power system studies and ensure alignment across engineering domains.
- Develop utility interconnection strategies and support large-load grid integration initiatives.
- Review and approve key technical studies, designs, and engineering deliverables.
- Define system-level specifications for transformers, power electronics, BESS, reactive compensation, and UPS solutions.
- Serve as the primary technical interface for utilities, EPCs, grid operators, and equipment suppliers.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Mentor engineering teams and foster technical excellence across power systems disciplines.
Your Background
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems, grid dynamics, power electronics, or high-voltage systems.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant industry experience in power systems engineering and large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience with utility interconnection processes, grid compliance requirements, and large-load integration in North America.
- Strong knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, UL, and NERC standards applicable to power system design and operation.
- Experience with industry-leading simulation tools such as PSS®E, PowerFactory, PSCAD, or similar platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to work across power systems, data center infrastructure, controls, power electronics, and related engineering disciplines.

Power Systems Engineer Jobs in Raleigh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a power systems engineer job in Raleigh?
Raleigh's strongest hiring comes from electric utilities, defense and government contractors, and the growing clean energy sector anchored around Research Triangle Park and North Hills. Candidates with experience in grid modernization, relay protection, or power flow analysis tend to move fastest in this market. Targeting employers in the utility and aerospace sectors, and building familiarity with NERC reliability standards, gives applicants a clear edge locally.
Which companies hire power systems engineers in Raleigh?
Employers hiring power systems engineers in Raleigh right now include Hitachi Rail, Linxon, and Hitachi Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Raleigh's mix of investor-owned utilities, engineering consultancies, and federal agency contractors creates consistent demand across multiple employer types.
Are there remote power systems engineer jobs in Raleigh?
Yes, though options are limited since most power systems engineer work requires on-site access to equipment, substations, or utility infrastructure. About 44% of power systems engineer openings tied to Raleigh are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, with remote arrangements most common for modeling, simulation, and planning-focused roles rather than field or commissioning positions.
How can I get a power systems engineer job in Raleigh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Raleigh is through engineering associate or junior engineer roles at electric utilities or mid-size power engineering consultancies, several of which operate near Research Triangle Park and recruit from NC State's electrical engineering program. Internship experience with a regional utility or energy consultancy, combined with coursework in power systems analysis or protection, is what Raleigh employers consistently look for in entry-level candidates.
Which industries hire the most power systems engineers in Raleigh?
Raleigh power systems engineer roles concentrate in Energy, Transportation & Logistics, and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Raleigh's proximity to major utility operations, a growing renewable energy project pipeline, and a dense cluster of defense and government engineering contractors drive consistent hiring across those sectors.
