Principal Software Engineer Jobs in Georgia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal software engineer in Georgia?
Becoming a principal software engineer in Georgia follows a progression through individual contributor and senior engineering roles before companies promote or hire into the principal level. Georgia imposes no state-issued license or registration for software engineering. Most hiring managers look for a computer science or engineering degree, sustained technical leadership across multiple production systems, and a demonstrated record of influencing architecture decisions. Georgia's dense fintech and enterprise software ecosystem means experience with large-scale transactional platforms is particularly valued by local employers.
How much do principal software engineers make in Georgia?
Principal software engineers in Georgia earn a median of about $131,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,110 for the lowest 10% to over $176,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal software engineers in Georgia?
Employers hiring principal software engineers in Georgia right now include UKG, Lynx, and Aderant, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Georgia's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and fintech companies means principal engineering roles here often involve global-scale platforms and cross-functional technical leadership.
Which Georgia cities have the most principal software engineer jobs?
Atlanta, Georgia, and Marietta have the most principal software engineer openings in Georgia. Atlanta drives the vast majority of demand as the state's technology and corporate headquarters hub, home to major fintech firms, airline systems, and enterprise software companies, while Alpharetta's established technology corridor adds a strong secondary cluster of openings from mid-size and Fortune 500 technology employers based there.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 77% of principal software engineer openings tied to Georgia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally suited the role is to distributed collaboration. The parts of the work most commonly done remotely include architecture reviews, design sessions, and cross-team technical mentorship, though on-site presence is sometimes expected during major project milestones or team planning cycles.
How can I get hired as a principal software engineer in Georgia with little or no experience?
The most realistic path for candidates without principal-level experience is to build toward it through a senior engineering role at one of Georgia's larger technology employers, then demonstrate architectural ownership on a meaningful system. Companies like Fiserv and NCR Voyix run structured engineering career ladders where senior engineers can take on tech lead or staff engineer assignments that build the skills principals need. Contributing to open-source infrastructure projects or leading a backend overhaul in your current role creates the portfolio evidence Georgia hiring managers look for when making the principal-level call.
