Job Summary
Utilizes ionizing radiation to create diagnostic imaging radiographs of designated anatomical areas in accordance with established practices and procedures of all age groups. Obtains patient history, explains routine procedures, and addresses patient concerns. Provides appropriate patient care following the Radiology Gold Service Excellence guidelines to achieve successful completion of procedure. Exercise professional judgment in the performance of this service following the Code of Conduct of the ARRT. Contribute as a team member to enhance job stewardship mindful of Internal and External customer service standards.
This position primarily reports to Troy Medical Campus. May potentially rotate to other offsites, as needed.
Responsibilities
- Perform high quality diagnostic procedures, applying principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patients, staff, and practitioners.
- Position patients for detailed orthopedic/MSK protocols, using appropriate radiation protection devices and immobilizing techniques for age specific patient populations.
- Evaluate images for technical quality, demonstration of area of interest, permanent marker usage, and patient identification.
- Maintain knowledge of and observe universal precautions and all other precautions determined by Michigan Medicine.
- Respond to patients changing physical conditions, such as changes in airway/breathing, heart rate, acute change in level of consciousness, seizure etc.
- Effectively communicate with patients to obtain important clinical information, ensure correct order and laterality, instruct the patient, relieve anxiety, and gain cooperation during procedures, etc.
- Identify and administer correct contrast media per department protocol.
- Understand and apply guest relations skills and display excellent customer service.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Demonstrate excellent collaboration and teamwork.
- Adapt to changing environments (flexible schedules, emergency conditions, protocol development, and advancing technology).
- Function effectively under conditions which are often fast paced and stressful.
- Maintain current ARRT registration.
- Maintain current BLS certification.
- Perform additional duties as required at an outpatient facility, including taking inventory, unloading and stocking inventory, and other tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a school of radiologic technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology required or registry eligible with the first exam attempt must be within 6 months from hire/transfer. 3 attempts must be completed within 18 months from hire/transfer.
- This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with PACS and EMR systems as well as proficient computer entry skills.
- Experience with GE OEC c-arms, Digital Imaging systems, and GI/GU Procedures.
- CPR/BLS Certification.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills, ingenuity, creativity, and professionalism.
- Demonstrate understanding with all age-appropriate guidelines for communication, General Imaging positioning, radiation exposures, radiation equipment and protection.
- Must have physical ability to push, pull, assist, and transfer patients safely. Must display physical dexterity using fine and large motor skills.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule
Primary location: Troy Medical Campus, with coverage at other off-site locations, as needed.
Monday-Thursday, or Tuesday-Friday 10a-6p
Rotating Saturdays
Scheduling Flexibility: The department makes every effort to provide consistent schedules; however, shifts and schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet patient care and operational requirements.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
