Regional Planner Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Michigan?
A bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or public policy is the standard entry point, though many Michigan employers prefer a master's degree for mid- and senior-level roles. Michigan does not require a state-issued license to practice planning, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely recognized by Michigan employers and regional planning commissions as the professional standard. Candidates typically build toward AICP certification after gaining qualifying work experience.
Which companies hire regional planners in Michigan?
Michigan regional planner roles are posted by Hantz, Stellantis, and KLA and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Michigan's network of regional planning commissions, county governments, and state transportation agencies makes public-sector employers the most consistent source of openings across the state.
Which Michigan cities have the most regional planner jobs?
Auburn Hills, Ann Arbor, and Lansing account for the largest share of regional planner openings in Michigan. Detroit leads because of the density of municipal agencies, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, and major transportation corridors, while Lansing draws openings from state agencies including the Michigan Department of Transportation, and Grand Rapids reflects the rapid growth and infrastructure investment in West Michigan.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since regional planning regularly involves site visits, public hearings, and in-person collaboration with local officials. About 24% of regional planner openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that arrangement. The tasks most suited to remote work are GIS analysis, report writing, and grant research, while fieldwork and community engagement components remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or a planning technician role with a Michigan county planning department or a regional planning commission such as the West Michigan Regional Planning Commission or the Grand Valley Metropolitan Council, both of which have historically brought on graduates and career changers. Adjacent roles in GIS analysis, zoning administration, or community development specialist positions at Michigan municipalities are also common stepping stones. A completed master's in planning or a GIS certification strengthens a new applicant's profile considerably with Michigan public-sector employers.
