Regional Planner Jobs in New Hampshire: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in New Hampshire?
Most regional planner positions in New Hampshire require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, public administration, or a related field, with a master's degree preferred for mid-level and senior roles. New Hampshire does not issue a state-specific planning license, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely expected by municipal and regional planning agencies. Candidates gain eligibility for the AICP exam after accumulating supervised professional planning experience following graduation.
Which companies hire regional planners in New Hampshire?
Employers hiring regional planners in New Hampshire right now include BAE Systems USA, Lonza, and Creare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Regional planning commissions spread across New Hampshire's nine planning regions, along with state agencies and municipal planning departments, are the most consistent sources of full-time openings in the state.
Which New Hampshire cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in New Hampshire are Merrimack, Manchester, and Nashua. Concord leads because it is the state capital and home to multiple state agencies including the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and the Office of Strategic Initiatives, while Manchester and Nashua generate demand through their large municipal planning departments and proximity to the greater Boston development corridor driving land use activity.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in New Hampshire?
Yes, but they are limited, because regional planning work routinely requires site visits, public hearings, and in-person coordination with municipal boards. About 71% of regional planner openings tied to New Hampshire are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with flexibility most common for research, GIS analysis, and comprehensive plan writing tasks rather than permitting review or board presentations.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in New Hampshire with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or assistant planner role with one of New Hampshire's nine regional planning commissions, such as the Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission or the North Country Council, which regularly bring on graduates for project support work. Entry-level candidates can also move laterally from adjacent roles in GIS technician, code enforcement, or municipal administration positions. Completing a master's degree in planning and beginning the process toward AICP eligibility gives candidates a measurable edge in competitive searches.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in New Hampshire?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in New Hampshire on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match your experience and career goals.
