For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it's what we show up for every day.
Smartsheet is building the next generation of AI-powered strategic planning and work execution agents through SmartAssist, our intelligent agent platform. You will work closely with Engineering and AI Platform teams, embedded in a team working in a critical area and building toward a mature Agent Development Lifecycle (ADLC).
You will architect how we design, build, and operationalize AI-driven solutions that transform work execution at enterprise scale.
You Will:
- Design and build production-grade LLM-powered agents and workflows within Smartsheet, including architecture decisions on system design, data pipelines, and deployment strategies
- Develop and optimize prompts, RAG pipelines, and agent reasoning patterns; build evaluation frameworks to measure accuracy, hallucination rates, and performance across model versions
- Implement and manage end-to-end AI systems on cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including monitoring, optimization, and incident response
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical AI solutions that drive real impact
- Mentor and guide other engineers on applied ML best practices, modern AI development patterns, and production considerations
- Establish best practices and standards for AI development, model governance, and responsible AI within the organization
- Stay current with the rapidly evolving AI/LLM landscape and evaluate emerging tools, frameworks, and techniques for Smartsheet's needs
You Have:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working directly with LLMs in production
- Deep, hands-on experience with prompt engineering and context engineering, you understand how model behavior changes with framing, structure, and input design
- Strong working knowledge of RAG architectures: chunking strategies, embedding models, retrieval evaluation, and failure diagnosis
- Experience building or extending LLM evaluation frameworks, you have designed scorers, worked with golden datasets, and thought carefully about what good looks like
- Fluency in agent system design, you don't need to own the architecture, but you can engage as a peer on architectural tradeoffs that affect quality
- Strong Python skills; comfortable working in data-heavy environments (Databricks, Delta tables, or equivalent)
- Ability to communicate complex quality findings (written and verbal) to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, you can explain what's broke, why it matters, and what needs to happen next without losing the room
- Strong cross-functional judgment, you know when to escalate, when to resolve independently, and how to build credibility across engineering, product, and AI platform teams
- A bias for clarity in ambiguous situations, when failure modes are murky and trade-offs are real, you bring structure and a clear point of view rather than waiting for consensus
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
- BS or MS in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent industry experience
Strong Plus:
- Experience with MLflow or similar experiment tracking platforms
- Familiarity with CI-integrated evaluation pipelines
- Experience with multi-agent orchestration frameworks
- Prior work in an Applied AI or LLMOps function within a product company
What Success Looks Like:
In your first 6 months, you will have:
- Delivered measurable, validated quality improvement on at least one SmartAssist agent across our defined quality dimensions
- Expanded evaluation coverage to close the most significant blind spots in our current framework
- Established a repeatable quality improvement methodology the broader team can apply
Why This Role:
- You will have real ownership, not a supporting role on someone else's roadmap
- SmartAssist is shipping to real users; this work has immediate, visible impact
- You will be part of a fast-moving team that deeply values engineering rigor and actively seeks diverse perspectives
Get to Know Us:
At Smartsheet, your ideas are heard, your potential is supported, and your contributions have real impact. You'll have the freedom to explore, push boundaries, and grow beyond your role. We welcome diverse perspectives and nontraditional paths—because we know that impact comes from individuals who care deeply and challenge thoughtfully. When you're doing work that stretches you, excites you, and connects you to something bigger, that's magic at work. Let's build what's next, together.

Tips for Your Remote AI Software Developer Job Search
Show async communication in your application
Remote ai software developer teams collaborate through written channels, not meetings. Include a well-structured project README, a technical blog post, or a documented model card in your portfolio to show hiring managers you can communicate complex AI decisions clearly in writing without being in the same room.
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote ai software developer openings from companies hiring across the U.S. in one place. You can find roles that match your stack and experience and apply directly, so you're not sorting through postings that don't fit your background.
Build a portfolio around deployed AI systems
Remote employers care more about what you've shipped than what you've studied. Publish end-to-end projects that show model selection, fine-tuning, evaluation, and deployment using tools like Hugging Face, LangChain, or a major cloud ML platform so reviewers can see real, working output.
Prepare for remote-style technical interviews
Remote ai software developer interviews often include async take-home assessments or collaborative coding sessions over shared environments rather than whiteboard formats. Practice explaining your architectural decisions in writing and be ready to walk through model performance trade-offs on a live call with your camera on.
Signal self-direction throughout your job search
Remote hiring managers screen for candidates who set their own direction. Structure your resume to show autonomous project ownership, not just team participation. Phrases like 'independently designed,' 'led end-to-end,' or 'defined evaluation criteria' tell a remote employer you won't need constant direction once onboarded.
Remote AI Software Developer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote ai software developer job?
Remote ai software developer roles go to candidates who can demonstrate both technical depth and the ability to work independently without daily supervision. Remote employers screen heavily for experience with LLM frameworks, model fine-tuning, and MLOps tooling, plus strong written communication for async collaboration. A public GitHub portfolio with deployed AI projects, contributions to open-source ML libraries, or documented end-to-end model work gives your application a concrete edge over generic resumes.
Which companies hire remote ai software developers?
Companies hiring remote ai software developers right now include CVS Health, Netflix, and Humana, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first technology firms, distributed SaaS companies, and AI-native startups across software, healthcare, and fintech sectors account for the largest share of remote postings for this role.
Can you get a remote ai software developer job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level ai software developer roles are harder to land because employers expect you to ramp up independently with minimal hand-holding. AI-native startups and remote-first product companies are the most likely to hire junior candidates. What opens the door is a demonstrable project portfolio, whether personal AI tools, open-source contributions, or completed coursework with deployed outputs, that shows you can ship real work without close oversight.
Do you need a degree for remote ai software developer jobs?
Not always. Remote employers hiring ai software developers weigh demonstrable technical skills, a strong project portfolio, and hands-on experience with AI frameworks heavily alongside formal credentials. A degree in computer science or a related field helps at larger companies, but many remote-first firms and AI startups prioritize what you've built and deployed over where you studied.
Which industries hire the most remote ai software developers?
Most remote ai software developer openings sit in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Consulting & Professional Services, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors rely on distributed engineering teams and invest heavily in AI-driven products, making remote ai software developer roles a core part of their hiring.
