The Deputy Chief Engineer – Avionics and Electronics Lead serves in a critical role leading development of Orion Space Solutions (OSS) products and programs. This is a builder’s leadership role: you will spend significant time in architecture and avionics design while guiding electronics engineers in the design, test, and verification of complex electronic systems. You will own the technical direction of all spacecraft electronics and be accountable for their design excellence, integration, and verification from requirements through flight.
- Lead and oversee development of complex space vehicle avionics architecture encompassing command and data handling (C&DH), payload processing, digital communications, electrical power subsystem (EPS), and radio-frequency (RF) communication circuits.
- Lead and mentor OSS staff while contributing directly, and hands-on, to the avionics designs.
- Hold regular technical interchanges with development staff to drive accountability for delivery against cost and schedule targets with a high level of technical excellence.
- Lead and organize spacecraft avionics and electronics design reviews at the architecture and implementation levels, ensuring designs meet customer requirements. Chair reviews, track and drive review metrics, and embed yourself in the design team. Work in close collaboration with the Chief Engineer and other engineering leaders across OSS.
- Lead, organize, and develop design documentation covering space vehicle architecture, module designs, test plans, and verification and validation (V&V) methods.
- You will contribute to the development of avionics quality-assurance processes at OSS, working with the other engineering authorities: the Senior Director of Engineering, the Technical Director, and the Electrical Engineering Lead.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, in electrical or computer engineering field, plus 8-10 years, MS plus 6-8 years, or PhD plus 3-5 years of professional experience in engineering for high-reliability space and aerospace applications.
- Extensive experience designing space and aerospace electronics for high-reliability applications.
- Experience across all phases of development, from requirements definition through sustainment.
- Experience leading avionics and electronics development teams as a technical lead.
- Experience with aerospace requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama, or similar).
- Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) design tools such as KiCad, Altium Designer, or similar.
- Experience developing electronics designs that meet high-reliability flight standards (NASA GEVS, SMC-S-016, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, DO-254).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
Preferred
- Experience developing and implementing architectures for a variety of space customers.
- Experience designing complex embedded systems using System-on-Chip (SoC) or FPGA devices.
- Experience with FPGA design and verification using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Experience with bare-metal or RTOS firmware development for microcontrollers.

Tips for Your Remote Senior Electronics Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to hardware domains
Hiring managers in defense and aerospace scan for domain-specific keywords like schematic capture, FPGA design, or signal integrity analysis. Mirror the exact terminology from each job posting in your resume bullets, because applicant tracking systems filter on tool and domain names before a human reads your file.
Quantify design outcomes not just responsibilities
Replace vague statements like 'led PCB design' with measurable results such as reducing board layer count by a specific amount or cutting power consumption on a product revision. Senior-level roles expect evidence that your engineering decisions produced tangible outcomes, not just that you performed tasks.
Filter openings by required clearance level
Many senior electronics engineer roles in defense and government contracting require an active security clearance, which can eliminate candidates mid-process. Sort openings by clearance requirement early so you target roles you can actually start within a realistic timeline.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists senior electronics engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a technical portfolio with schematics
Many hiring teams for senior electronics engineers request work samples before or during the interview loop. Compile two or three representative projects showing your schematic, layout decisions, and test results, redacting any proprietary details, so you can share them quickly when asked.
Negotiate start dates around tape-out schedules
In semiconductor and ASIC roles, teams structure headcount around tape-out windows. Asking your recruiter where the team sits in the design cycle signals product awareness and gives you leverage to negotiate a start date that lets you contribute from day one rather than joining mid-crunch.
Remote Senior Electronics Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote senior electronics engineer job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they hire remotely by default and know how to onboard someone they never meet in person. Remote senior electronics engineer employers screen hard for self-direction and clear written communication on top of the core skills, so show evidence you can own work without someone over your shoulder. Apply to the openings above that match your experience.
Which companies hire remote senior electronics engineers?
Remote senior electronics engineer roles are posted by Lake Superior Consulting, Harley Ellis Devereaux, and Plug Power and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and large companies running distributed teams post the most remote senior electronics engineer roles.
Can you get a remote senior electronics engineer job with no experience?
Yes, but it is harder than an on-site role, because remote work expects you to operate independently from the start. Entry-level remote senior electronics engineer openings do exist, especially at remote-first companies, and a portfolio of real work helps more than a long resume. Applying broadly to the roles that fit improves your odds.
Do you need a degree for remote senior electronics engineer jobs?
Not always. Many employers hire remote senior electronics engineers on demonstrated skills and prior work rather than a specific degree, though some larger companies still prefer one. Showing relevant results matters more than a credential for most remote senior electronics engineer roles.
Which industries hire the most remote senior electronics engineers?
Remote senior electronics engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Manufacturing, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors run distributed teams and hire senior electronics engineers remotely most consistently.
