Research Data Scientist Jobs in Kansas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research data scientist in Kansas?
Research data scientists in Kansas are not required to hold a state-issued license, so the path runs through education and domain credentials. Most Kansas employers expect at least a master's degree in statistics, data science, or a quantitative field, with doctoral credentials preferred for university or federally funded research roles. Candidates targeting healthcare or bioscience positions often add domain-relevant certifications. Building a portfolio of reproducible research projects strengthens applications at Kansas universities, health systems, and aerospace research divisions significantly.
How much do research data scientists make in Kansas?
Research data scientists in Kansas earn a median of about $98,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,520 for the lowest 10% to over $154,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research data scientists in Kansas?
Employers hiring research data scientists in Kansas right now include IQVIA, Boeing, and Spirit AeroSystems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas's mix of large research universities, federally affiliated labs, and aerospace and healthcare organizations means openings appear across both private industry and academic or mission-driven institutions.
Which Kansas cities have the most research data scientist jobs?
Overland Park, Wichita, and Kansas City account for the largest share of research data scientist openings in Kansas. Wichita leads through its aerospace and manufacturing research ecosystem, Lawrence and nearby Kansas City draw heavily from University of Kansas research programs and Oracle Health's regional footprint, while smaller concentrations in Overland Park reflect corporate analytics and technology operations headquartered in the Kansas City suburb corridor.
Are there remote research data scientist jobs in Kansas?
Yes, and more than most fields, since research data science is inherently desk-based and output-driven rather than tied to a physical site. About 14% of research data scientist openings tied to Kansas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's natural flexibility. Fully remote openings tend to concentrate in software-adjacent or corporate analytics work, while positions involving wet-lab data, on-site experimentation, or classified research are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a research data scientist in Kansas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate research assistantship at the University of Kansas or Kansas State University, both of which place students in active research data pipelines and connect them directly to faculty-led grants and industry partnerships. Entry-level candidates often move in from adjacent roles such as data analyst, research coordinator, or statistical programmer. Building a public portfolio of end-to-end analyses using open datasets, contributing to faculty research projects, and pursuing credentials like the SAS certification or an AWS data specialty can make a candidate competitive for junior research scientist openings at Kansas health systems and aerospace firms.
Where can I find and apply to research data scientist jobs in Kansas?
You can find and apply to research data scientist jobs in Kansas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the listings to find roles that fit your background, experience level, and preferred location or work arrangement, then apply directly to the ones that match.
