Research Data Scientist Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research data scientist in Mississippi?
Most Mississippi employers require at minimum a master's degree in statistics, data science, computer science, or a related quantitative discipline, with doctoral degrees preferred for senior research roles. Mississippi does not issue a state license specifically for research data scientists, so hiring centers on academic credentials, a demonstrated portfolio of research projects, and proficiency in standard analytical tools. Candidates targeting university or medical center positions benefit from prior research experience gained through graduate programs at Mississippi State University or the University of Mississippi.
How much do research data scientists make in Mississippi?
Research data scientists in Mississippi earn a median of about $69,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $43,940 for the lowest 10% to over $125,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research data scientists in Mississippi?
Companies currently hiring research data scientists in Mississippi include University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson State University, and The University of Southern MIssissippi, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Mississippi's defense contracting sector and its network of university medical centers are particularly consistent sources of research data scientist openings across the state.
Which Mississippi cities have the most research data scientist jobs?
Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Tupelo account for the largest share of research data scientist openings in Mississippi. Jackson drives demand through the University of Mississippi Medical Center and state government health agencies, Starkville reflects the research output of Mississippi State University, and Hattiesburg benefits from the University of Southern Mississippi's data-intensive research programs and its growing healthcare corridor.
Are there remote research data scientist jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of research data scientist openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the work. Fully remote arrangements are most common in roles focused on statistical modeling, machine learning development, and data pipeline engineering, while positions requiring access to clinical datasets or laboratory systems are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a research data scientist in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate research assistantship at Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi, or the University of Southern Mississippi, which provides hands-on data work and a publishable portfolio simultaneously. Candidates can also pivot from adjacent roles such as data analyst, biostatistician, or research coordinator, which are common at UMMC and Mississippi's public health agencies. Building a portfolio of independent projects using publicly available health or demographic datasets, and earning a certification in Python or machine learning, significantly strengthens applications for junior research positions.
Where can I find and apply to research data scientist jobs in Mississippi?
You can find and apply to research data scientist jobs in Mississippi on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the available listings, find roles that match your background and preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
