Research Dietitian Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research dietitian in Virginia?
Start by completing an accredited dietetic internship and passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration exam to earn the registered dietitian nutritionist credential, which the Virginia Board of Medicine requires for practice in the state. Most research-focused positions in Virginia also expect a master's degree in nutrition or a related clinical field. From there, gaining experience in clinical trial coordination, grant-funded projects, or academic hospital settings builds the research profile Virginia employers look for.
Which companies hire research dietitians in Virginia?
Virginia research dietitian roles are posted by Healthcare Services, DaVita, and Sentara and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Virginia's concentration of academic medical centers and federally funded research institutions in Northern Virginia and Richmond creates a steady base of openings across both hospital and government-affiliated settings.
Which Virginia cities have the most research dietitian jobs?
Richmond, Arlington, and Lynchburg have the most research dietitian openings in Virginia right now. Richmond anchors the market through Virginia Commonwealth University Health and its affiliated research programs, Northern Virginia draws demand from proximity to federal health agencies and large integrated systems like Inova, and Hampton Roads adds openings through its military medical infrastructure and regional hospital networks.
Are there remote research dietitian jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields because the role often involves direct patient contact, lab coordination, or on-site trial management. About 28% of research dietitian openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a market where some work is location-dependent. The tasks most likely to be done remotely are data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant writing, rather than clinical or specimen-collection components.
How can I get hired as a research dietitian in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying for a dietetic research assistant or clinical nutrition coordinator role at one of Virginia's academic medical centers, such as those affiliated with VCU Health or Inova, which regularly bring on early-career dietitians to support funded studies. Volunteering or interning on an IRB-approved research project during your dietetic internship builds direct evidence of research exposure. Holding the registered dietitian nutritionist credential and completing any graduate-level research methods coursework gives candidates a clear edge over applicants without it.
Where can I find and apply to research dietitian jobs in Virginia?
