Job Description
The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition has an excellent opportunity for a Registered Nurse 2 – Research to join the Bjornstad/Tommerdahl/Pyle laboratory.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the UW Diabetes Institute Director, the Registered Nurse 2 – Research will perform clinical nursing procedures in accordance with research protocols and evaluate outcomes of patient participation in research studies. Working under the general direction of Principal Investigators and in close collaboration with advanced practice providers, the Registered Nurse 2 Research will conduct clinical procedures, support regulatory aspects of research, and collect, organize, and analyze data obtained from research participants.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Research Responsibilities 60%
- Conduct examinations, assess body composition, accompany participants during magnetic resonance imaging or other procedures, monitor and administer treatments and/or medications in accordance with research protocols, and evaluate outcomes of patient participation in research studies.
- Conduct procedures including IV placement, blood draws, oral and IV glucose tolerance tests, renal clearance studies, clamp procedures, infusions, lab processing, and other assessments as required by study protocols; collect, organize, and analyze data obtained in a medical research setting; assist with complex procedures in conjunction with providers or other personnel.
- Establish the methodology for carrying out aspects of specific research projects; design and follow best practices for care of participants with diabetes and related conditions across the age spectrum, including those with diabetic kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, and obesity.
- May assist with preparation of quotes or budgets or general support required for the successful operation of an active research program.
- Perform related duties as required.
Team Leadership & Coordination 30%
- Interact with personnel, investigators, staff, and participants from a wide variety of backgrounds and across multiple study designs and topics.
- Apply an advanced knowledge of nursing practices to research on diabetes and related disorders.
- Communicate with study personnel, Principal Investigators, and other providers to integrate participation in research studies with clinical treatment; independently engage clinical providers to support research participant recruitment, including presenting research studies and reviewing patient records to assess eligibility.
Regulatory Compliance 10%
- Comply with all IRB and sponsored research requirements, and institutional research policies.
- Monitor and document adverse events (AEs), and serious adverse events (SAEs), and protocol deviations (PDs) in adherence with study requirements and regulatory standards.
- Assist with regulatory submissions, research documentation, and study startup activities as needed to support the successful operation of an active research program.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or a relevant field AND two (2) years of experience at the Registered Nurse 1 – Research level.
- Legal Requirement(s): Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington.
- Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience and interest in diabetes or related research.
- Skilled in IV placement and infusion management.
- Experience in conduct and supervision of clinical and translational research studies.
- Flexibility to work occasional weekends and early morning or late evening shifts, as required by study visit schedules.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex research protocols.
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$81,084.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$153,240.00 annual
