High School Adjustment Counselor
Pioneer Charter School of Science II
Position Summary
The High School Adjustment Counselor at Pioneer Charter School of Science I supports the social, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal development of students in grades 9 through 12. This position focuses on student wellness, behavior management, discipline, conflict resolution, and the development of a safe, respectful, and positive school culture.
The Adjustment Counselor serves as a key member of the student support team and works closely with students, families, teachers, and administrators to address behavioral and social emotional needs. Responsibilities include counseling services, behavior management, discipline, bus supervision, assemblies, after school events, crisis response, character education, and student support interventions.
Key Responsibilities
Social Emotional Counseling and Student Support:
- Provide individual and small group counseling focused on students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Support students in developing self regulation, emotional awareness, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, and responsible decision making.
- Respond to student crises, behavioral concerns, peer conflicts, and emotional support needs.
- Collaborate with families, teachers, and administrators to support student wellbeing and behavioral growth.
- Participate in student support meetings, safety planning, and behavioral intervention planning as needed.
- Maintain accurate counseling records and documentation in accordance with school policies and confidentiality requirements.
- Assist families in accessing outside counseling or community based support services when appropriate.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful school culture.
Character Education:
- Develop and teach character education classes and lessons for middle school students.
- Lead instruction and activities focused on topics such as respect, responsibility, empathy, citizenship, integrity, digital citizenship, and conflict resolution.
- Collaborate with school staff to reinforce schoolwide expectations and character development initiatives.
- Support programs and activities that strengthen school culture, student leadership, and community building.
Behavior Management and Discipline:
- Lead and oversee the middle school behavior management and discipline system.
- Investigate student conduct concerns and respond appropriately using restorative and progressive discipline practices.
- Meet with students and families regarding behavioral concerns and support plans.
- Maintain discipline records and behavioral documentation.
- Work closely with faculty and staff to support consistent behavioral expectations across the school.
- Coordinate re entry meetings, restorative conversations, mediation, and student accountability processes.
- Support bullying prevention, conflict resolution, and student wellness initiatives.
School Supervision and Operations:
- Oversee student supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, transitions, and other assigned times.
- Coordinate and supervise bus procedures, transportation concerns, and communication related to student behavior on buses.
- Organize and supervise school assemblies, student activities, and after school events.
- Support emergency drills, crisis response procedures, and student safety protocols.
- Assist with maintaining orderly and respectful student conduct throughout the school day.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Maintain regular communication with families regarding student behavioral and social emotional concerns.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student wellbeing and school culture.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school committees as assigned.
- Support schoolwide initiatives related to student wellness, behavior, safety, and culture.
Qualifications
- Degree in Counseling, School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field required.
- Must hold a valid Massachusetts School Adjustment Counselor or Social Worker license or appropriate state licensure required for the position.
- Experience working with middle school students strongly preferred.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Experience with restorative practices, behavior intervention systems, and student discipline preferred.
- Ability to plan and deliver engaging character education lessons for middle school students.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and student centered in high stress situations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move throughout the school building and supervise students in multiple settings.
- Ability to attend evening events and activities as assigned.
- Ability to respond promptly during emergencies or student incidents.
