Principal Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal in Massachusetts?
Becoming a principal in Massachusetts requires earning a Principal or Assistant Principal license through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Candidates must hold a master's degree in educational leadership or administration, complete a state-approved preparation program, and pass the required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure assessments. Most districts also expect several years of classroom teaching experience before considering applicants for building leadership roles.
Which companies hire principals in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring principals in Massachusetts right now include Raytheon, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and Draper, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's mix of large urban districts, regional charter networks, and private independent schools means principal openings appear across a wide range of organizational types and community sizes throughout the state.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most principal jobs?
Boston, Tewksbury, and Cambridge have the most principal openings in Massachusetts right now. Boston's size and density of public, charter, and private schools drives the largest share of listings, while Worcester and Springfield generate consistent demand as the state's other major urban districts with substantial student populations and active administrative turnover.
Are there remote principal jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're rare. Building-level principals are expected to be physically present to lead staff, oversee student safety, and manage daily school operations, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 59% of principal openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those that offer flexibility tend to be district-office administrative or curriculum director roles rather than traditional school-based principalships.
How can I get hired as a principal in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistant principal role, which Massachusetts districts including Boston Public Schools and Springfield Public Schools use as a structured stepping stone to the principalship. Candidates without administrative experience can strengthen their candidacy by completing a DESE-approved preparation program, taking on department head or instructional coach positions, and pursuing a provisional principal license while accruing supervised leadership hours required for full licensure.
Where can I find and apply to principal jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to principal jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Massachusetts school districts, charter networks, and private institutions. Find roles that fit your experience and licensure level and apply directly to the employers posting them.
