Why does the job exist?
This position exists to support the Radiation Control Bureau's mission of protecting public health and safety by ensuring compliance with the state and federal regulations. It serves as a key technical resource for the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) Program and supports the Radioactive Materials (RAM) program and X-ray program to ensure compliance across New Mexico. As the use of radiation devices, radioactive materials, and NORM in the oil and gas industry increases, this role is essential to ensure safe operations in accordance with New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) regulations, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements, and health physics principles.
In addition, this role provides advanced coordination of regulatory activities within the State's radiation protection program, including rule making, advisory committee engagement, and stakeholder coordination. Ensures the development, implementation, and consistency of regulations in accordance with the New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC), supporting decision-making that safeguards public health and ensures adherence to radiation control standards.
How does it get done?
- Review and process NORM License activities and perform NORM inspections according to regulatory standards
- Conduct inspections of X-ray facilities and support the inspection of radioactive materials (RAM) licensees to verify compliance with radiation safety regulations and health physics standards
- Review and process applications for X-ray registration and support licensing activities for RAM (including new, renewal, and amendments), ensuring accuracy and adherence to regulations
- Prepare inspection reports, communicate necessary corrective actions to registrants and licensees, keep precise records for enforcement purposes, and follow up on compliance issues to ensure timely resolution
- Offer technical guidance to licensees, registrants, and the public regarding radiation safety, equipment operation, and regulatory requirements

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and four (4) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT). Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required.
