Most employers in New York's garment and fashion industry look for graduates of programs at schools like the Fashion Institute of Technology or Parsons School of Design, or candidates with a portfolio demonstrating construction skills. Apprenticeships through theatrical costume unions such as IATSE Local 764 also provide a formal entry route for those focused on stage and film work.
How much do sewings make in New York?
Sewings in New York earn a median of about $38,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,790 for the lowest 10% to over $55,290 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sewings in New York?
Employers hiring sewings in New York right now include YAI - Seeing Beyond Disability, EwingCole, and Syracuse University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's deep concentration of fashion houses, bridal ateliers, and Broadway costume shops means hiring tends to cluster around both major brands and smaller specialty workrooms throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Which New York cities have the most sewing jobs?
The cities with the most sewing openings in New York are Brooklyn, New York, and Queens. New York City dominates because of its globally recognized fashion industry and the Garment District, while Brooklyn and Long Island City draw volume from upholstery shops, costume houses, and smaller production workrooms that have relocated from Manhattan to lower-cost neighborhoods.
Are there remote sewing jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Sewing is a hands-on, equipment-dependent trade that requires physical presence at a machine, so the vast majority of roles are on-site. About 8% of sewing openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be pattern drafting, sewing instruction, or quality assurance roles that have a meaningful desk-based component.
