Software Architect Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software architect in Illinois?
Illinois does not require a state-issued license to work as a software architect. The standard path is a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or software engineering, followed by several years of hands-on software development before moving into architectural roles. Illinois employers also value vendor certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, and candidates who can show direct ownership of architecture decisions on complex enterprise systems move through hiring processes faster.
How much do software architects make in Illinois?
Software architects in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software architects in Illinois?
Employers hiring software architects in Illinois right now include Abbott, Siemens, and Ecentria, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of financial services firms, insurance headquarters, and logistics technology companies means demand is broad and not limited to pure technology sectors.
Which Illinois cities have the most software architect jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Oak Brook have the most software architect openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the majority of demand through its dense concentration of financial institutions, healthcare systems, and enterprise technology companies, while Naperville and Schaumburg contribute meaningfully because major employers like Motorola Solutions and Allstate operate large technology campuses in the western suburbs.
Are there remote software architect jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of software architect openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and collaborative-but-asynchronous nature of the work. The portions of the role most amenable to fully remote arrangements include architecture documentation, design reviews, and stakeholder alignment, while on-site or hybrid expectations are more common when a role involves embedded work with product engineering teams.
How can I get hired as a software architect in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a senior software engineer role into an informal or explicit architect track within the same organization. Large Illinois-based employers like Allstate, Discover Financial, and Northwestern Medicine run structured internal development programs that give senior engineers architecture exposure before a formal title change. Building a portfolio of system design work, contributing to open-source architecture projects, and earning a cloud certification from AWS or Azure strengthens a candidate's case when applying to junior or associate architect roles.
Where can I find and apply to software architect jobs in Illinois?
