Software Design Engineer Jobs in Oklahoma: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software design engineer in Oklahoma?
A bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field is the standard entry point for software design engineer roles in Oklahoma. The state does not require a specific license for most software design engineer positions, though engineers working on systems that cross into traditional engineering domains may pursue Professional Engineer registration through the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Defense and aerospace employers often add a security clearance requirement.
How much do software design engineers make in Oklahoma?
Software design engineers in Oklahoma earn a median of about $118,100 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,190 for the lowest 10% to over $169,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software design engineers in Oklahoma?
Employers hiring software design engineers in Oklahoma right now include Expleo, Northrop Grumman, and WSB, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oklahoma's aerospace corridor centered in Tulsa and its energy technology sector in Oklahoma City generate consistent demand for engineers with embedded systems and software integration backgrounds.
Which Oklahoma cities have the most software design engineer jobs?
Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Norman account for the largest concentration of software design engineer openings in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City's mix of energy technology companies and federal agency contractors drives much of the demand, Tulsa's aerospace and manufacturing base supports a dense cluster of systems and embedded engineering roles, and smaller markets benefit from the overflow of engineering work from major employer campuses in those two metros.
Are there remote software design engineer jobs in Oklahoma?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 23% of software design engineer openings tied to Oklahoma are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally suited most software design work is to distributed collaboration. The roles most likely to require on-site presence are those tied to classified programs, hardware integration labs, or manufacturing floor environments, particularly in Oklahoma's defense and aerospace sector.
How can I get hired as a software design engineer in Oklahoma with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to associate or junior software engineer roles at Oklahoma's major aerospace and defense contractors, where new-graduate hiring programs are common. Boeing and L3Harris both run structured entry-level engineering pipelines that recruit from Oklahoma State University, the University of Oklahoma, and Tulsa's engineering programs. Building a portfolio of embedded or systems projects, earning a foundational certification in a relevant tool like MATLAB, or moving laterally from a software testing or systems analyst role are the approaches that open doors most consistently.
Where can I find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Oklahoma?
You can find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Oklahoma on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the roles that match your background and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
