Software Design Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software design engineer in Texas?
Most software design engineer roles in Texas require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science from an accredited program. Texas does not mandate a state license for software design engineers in private industry, though engineers who sign off on public-facing projects may pursue a Professional Engineer license through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Building expertise in embedded systems, FPGA design, or semiconductor toolchains significantly strengthens a candidacy with Texas employers.
How much do software design engineers make in Texas?
Software design engineers in Texas earn a median of about $132,150 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,600 for the lowest 10% to over $183,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software design engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring software design engineers in Texas right now include Apple, Fluor, and Micron Technology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of semiconductor, defense, and enterprise technology firms means demand is distributed across the state rather than limited to a single metro.
Which Texas cities have the most software design engineer jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Richardson have the most software design engineer openings in Texas. Austin's dense cluster of semiconductor and software firms, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex's telecommunications and defense contractors, and Houston's aerospace and energy-technology sector each drive sustained demand, meaning the city at the top of your list reflects the industry concentration rather than a single dominant employer.
Are there remote software design engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely software-focused disciplines because the role often involves hardware prototyping, lab validation, and access to specialized EDA tooling that requires on-site presence. About 15% of software design engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote share skewed toward the firmware, RTL verification, and simulation-heavy portions of the work rather than physical design and test.
How can I get hired as a software design engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or new-graduate rotation program at a major Texas employer. Texas Instruments, Dell Technologies, and Raytheon Technologies all run structured new-grad engineering programs in Texas that place candidates without full-time experience into mentored design roles. Pursuing a senior capstone project involving embedded hardware or FPGA development, or earning an entry-level Electronics Technician certification through IPC, can differentiate a resume. Adjacent starting roles such as hardware test engineer or firmware validation engineer at Texas-based defense and semiconductor firms also provide a direct bridge into design work.
Where can I find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from the listing.
