Software Test Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software test engineer in Texas?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, followed by building a portfolio of automated test scripts and QA projects. Texas does not require a state-issued license for software test engineers. Employers across Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston consistently look for hands-on automation experience, so contributing to open-source test frameworks or completing relevant certifications such as ISTQB Foundation strengthens a candidacy significantly.
How much do software test engineers make in Texas?
Software test engineers in Texas earn a median of about $101,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,010 for the lowest 10% to over $153,380 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software test engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring software test engineers in Texas right now include Apple, Celestica, and Sanmina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's deep concentration of defense contractors, semiconductor firms, and enterprise software companies means sustained, recurring demand for test engineers across the state's major metros.
Which Texas cities have the most software test engineer jobs?
Austin, Richardson, and Dallas have the most software test engineer openings in Texas. Austin's dense cluster of enterprise software and semiconductor companies drives much of the demand there, while Dallas-Fort Worth's telecom, fintech, and defense contractors sustain strong hiring, and Houston's aerospace and energy technology firms round out the picture for smaller or suburban markets in those corridors.
Are there remote software test engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 6% of software test engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. Test automation, code review, and defect tracking are the parts of the job most commonly performed fully remotely, while roles involving embedded hardware or on-site device testing tend to require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software test engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting associate QA analyst or junior quality assurance engineer roles, which large Texas employers such as Dell Technologies and NXP Semiconductors post for candidates coming directly from computer science or engineering programs. Building a portfolio of automated test scripts on GitHub, earning an ISTQB Foundation certification, and applying to structured new-graduate programs at Texas-based tech and defense firms gives candidates a concrete edge over those relying on coursework alone.
Where can I find and apply to software test engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to software test engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and other markets in the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
