Software Test Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software test engineer in Washington?
Software test engineering in Washington has no state-issued license or registration requirement, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Washington employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Building hands-on experience with automation frameworks, earning widely recognized credentials like ISTQB, and assembling a portfolio of test projects or open-source contributions strengthens an application significantly in Washington's competitive tech market.
How much do software test engineers make in Washington?
Software test engineers in Washington earn a median of about $128,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,180 for the lowest 10% to over $202,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software test engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring software test engineers in Washington right now include TikTok, Apple, and SpaceX, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's concentration of major technology headquarters and large aerospace and defense contractors means sustained, consistent demand for quality assurance and test engineering talent across the state.
Which Washington cities have the most software test engineer jobs?
Seattle, Redmond, and Bellevue have the most software test engineer openings in Washington. Seattle and Bellevue drive volume through their density of software product companies and cloud infrastructure teams, while Redmond reflects the sustained hiring footprint of Microsoft's campus, and other suburban Eastside cities contribute openings tied to enterprise software and aerospace contractors headquartered in the region.
Are there remote software test engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields, because software testing work is inherently desk-based and tool-driven. About 25% of software test engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how readily the role translates to distributed teams. Automation engineering and API testing roles are the most consistently offered as fully remote, while embedded systems and hardware-adjacent testing positions typically require an on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software test engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate QA or junior test analyst role, which Washington technology companies and staffing firms regularly post as explicit new-grad positions. Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing each run internship and rotational programs that include software quality and test functions. Moving laterally from a technical support, business analyst, or junior developer role is also a recognized route. An ISTQB Foundation certification and a portfolio of personal or open-source test automation projects give candidates a concrete edge in Washington's application pools.
