Tips for Your Specifications Writer Job Search
Tailor your resume to spec types
Hiring managers distinguish between MasterFormat CSI specs, military standards, and product data sheets. Name the specific specification formats you've written in your resume so recruiters immediately see your fit for their industry.
Show your software toolkit clearly
Specifications writers are expected to know tools like SpecLink, BSD SpecLink, Arcom, or e-SPECS. List every platform you've used and the context, because many postings screen for exact tool familiarity before the first interview.
Build a portfolio with redacted samples
Most specs you've written will be proprietary, so redact client names and project details before sharing. A short PDF with two or three sample sections demonstrating your division structure, scope language, and quality standards carries real weight.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists specifications writer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by sector before you search
Specifications writing varies significantly between architecture and engineering firms, defense contractors, manufacturers, and government agencies. Narrowing your search to one sector lets you match vocabulary and certification expectations rather than sending generic applications.
Prepare a live editing exercise for interviews
Many specifications writer interviews include a timed edit of a poorly written spec section. Practice tightening scope language, removing redundant clauses, and correctly cross-referencing related divisions so you can perform confidently under time pressure.
Specifications Writer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most specifications writers?
The companies hiring the most specifications writers right now include ECS Limited, Ghafari Associates, and Ghafari Associates, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Architecture and engineering firms, defense contractors, and large construction management companies tend to post the most consistently.
How many specifications writer jobs are remote?
About 24% of specifications writer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is notable for a role that has traditionally been office-based. Roles focused on editing, quality review, or standards development tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions tied to active construction projects more often require on-site presence.
How do you become a specifications writer?
Start with a degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management, then gain field or project experience that gives you a working knowledge of how drawings and specifications interact. Learn CSI MasterFormat conventions and practice writing division sections from existing project specs. Pursuing a CDT certification from the Construction Specifications Institute validates your knowledge and is frequently cited in job postings as a stepping stone to senior roles.
Can you get hired as a specifications writer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level specifications writer roles exist, particularly at large architecture and engineering firms that train junior staff through internal mentorship programs. Candidates with strong technical writing portfolios, exposure to construction documentation through internships, and basic knowledge of MasterFormat can compete effectively. Volunteering to write or review specs on smaller projects is a practical way to build samples before applying.
What does the specifications writer interview process look like?
Most interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on your background and the specification types you've produced. A technical exercise typically follows, asking you to review or rewrite a flawed spec section under a time limit. Final rounds often involve meeting project managers or architects who will assess whether your communication style and attention to detail fit their workflow and project complexity.
Where can I find and apply to specifications writer jobs?
You can find and apply to specifications writer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your background, sector preference, and seniority level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
