Student Services Counselor Jobs in West Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in West Virginia?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 school counselor positions, West Virginia requires a School Counselor certificate issued by the West Virginia Department of Education, which requires a master's degree in school counseling and completion of a supervised practicum. For higher education advising roles at colleges and universities, a bachelor's degree is the typical minimum, though many employers in West Virginia prefer or require a master's in counseling, higher education, or student affairs.
Which companies hire student services counselors in West Virginia?
Employers hiring student services counselors in West Virginia right now include West Virginia University, Mon Health, and CAMC Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. West Virginia's public university system and regional community and technical colleges are among the most consistent sources of openings in the state.
Which West Virginia cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
The cities with the most student services counselor openings in West Virginia are Charleston, Morgantown, and Huntington. Morgantown leads because of West Virginia University's large enrollment and administrative footprint, while Charleston draws openings from state agency programs and community college campuses, and Huntington benefits from Marshall University's presence and its network of partner K-12 districts.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in West Virginia?
Yes, but they're limited. Student services counseling typically involves in-person meetings with students, campus events, and hands-on case management, which keeps most roles on-site. About 33% of student services counselor openings tied to West Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026. The positions most likely to offer remote flexibility are those focused on virtual advising, online program support, or college access outreach for statewide initiatives.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in West Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through graduate assistantships or AmeriCorps positions embedded in college access programs like GEAR UP West Virginia, which places advisors in high schools across the state and is widely recognized by local employers as genuine field experience. West Virginia University and Marshall University regularly hire entry-level academic advisors and student success coaches who work under senior staff. A completed counseling practicum, familiarity with FAFSA processes, or experience tutoring or mentoring underrepresented students gives candidates a meaningful edge in the West Virginia market.
