Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Oregon?
To work as a dental assistant in Oregon you must register with the Oregon Board of Dentistry, which requires completing an accredited dental assisting program or meeting an experience-based pathway, passing a state-approved examination, and submitting a registration application. To perform radiographs you need a separate Oregon radiology certification. Most employers specifically hiring for surgical roles also expect chairside surgical experience, CPR certification, and familiarity with sedation protocols before you can assist in an operating environment.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Oregon?
Employers hiring surgical dental assistants in Oregon right now include Providence, Asante, and Legacy Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oregon's mix of large academic health systems, regional dental service organizations, and independent oral surgery practices means openings range from high-volume specialty groups to hospital-affiliated dental departments across the state.
Which Oregon cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Portland, Medford, and Bend consistently post the most surgical dental assistant openings in Oregon. Portland dominates because it anchors the state's largest concentration of oral surgery practices and is home to OHSU's dental programs, while Salem and Eugene support steady demand as regional service centers with their own specialty dental networks and growing suburban patient populations.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Oregon?
Yes, but they're rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on chairside role that requires physical presence for patient care, sterilization, and surgical support, so remote work is not a realistic option for most positions. About 3% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Oregon are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those exceptions typically involve administrative coordination, scheduling, or dental insurance processing tasks rather than direct clinical duties.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Oregon with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program at a Portland-area community college such as Portland Community College or Oregon Coast Community College, then applying to general dentistry practices before targeting oral surgery offices. Large Oregon employers like OHSU and Kaiser Permanente periodically post entry-level dental assistant openings that provide surgical exposure over time. Candidates with Oregon Board of Dentistry registration and a current radiology certification stand out significantly, as these credentials let a new assistant contribute on day one even without surgery-specific experience.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Oregon?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Oregon on Migrate Mate, which lists current Oregon openings from practices and health systems across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
