Why does the job exist?
The position involves moderate to large size dollar protest cases to be resolved with interpretation of statutes, regulations and department policy to taxpayers.
How does it get done?
This position will:
- Resolve and close 140 to 160 protest cases or 80% of protest cases assigned annually.
- Evaluate and attempt to resolve taxpayers documentation and statutes.
- Analyze and research cases and discuss issues, procedures and solutions with legal staff.
- Develop basis for case conclusions.
- Analyze, interpret and apply appropriate tax laws, regulations, decisions, orders and rulings to support case findings.
Who are the customers?
This position serves New Mexico taxpayers, businesses, external agencies and the Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD).
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation to include twelve (12) semester hours of accounting or auditing (three (3) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to three (3) semester hours of accounting or auditing). Four (4) years of experience in Auditing, Accounting, Taxation, Collections, or Finance may substitute for the required Bachelor's degree.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to VDT, extensive personal computer and phone usage. Extended periods of sitting and some lifting. Good communication skills; Interacting with the public required. High pressure/stress situations. Some outdoor work may be required. Travel both in state and out of state depending on business need (not to exceed 10%).
