Tips for Your Tax Attorney Job Search
Tailor your resume for each sector
Law firm applications want billable-hour experience and specific practice areas like transfer pricing or M&A tax. In-house roles want commercial awareness and cross-functional collaboration. Adjust your summary and bullet points to match the context of each opening you apply to.
Highlight your LLM or CPA credential prominently
An LLM in Taxation or a CPA license signals specialized depth that a JD alone does not. List these near the top of your resume, directly under your bar admissions, so hiring managers see them without scrolling.
Target openings by your transaction or controversy focus
Tax attorney postings are divided between transactional work and tax controversy or litigation. Applying to roles that match your actual experience, whether that's structuring deals or representing clients before the IRS, increases your callback rate significantly.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists tax attorney openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare technical answers for interview scenarios
Expect questions on real code provisions, entity selection analysis, or penalty abatement strategy. Rehearse two or three substantive examples from your practice where your tax analysis changed an outcome, and be ready to walk interviewers through your reasoning step by step.
Negotiate using your bar admissions and state combinations
If you're admitted in a high-demand state or hold multiple bar admissions, that portability has direct value to national firms and in-house teams. Name it explicitly when negotiating, because employers often treat multi-state admission as a concrete operational benefit worth compensating.
Tax Attorney Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most tax attorneys?
The companies hiring the most tax attorneys right now include Clifford Chance, Cooley LLP, and Dorsey & Whitney LLP, with the largest share of openings in California, Montana, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Both large law firms and Fortune 500 in-house legal departments consistently drive the highest volume of postings.
How many tax attorney jobs are remote?
About 31% of tax attorney openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a shift that accelerated in corporate and government roles. Tax controversy and federal tax compliance work tends to be the most remote-compatible, while roles tied to deal closings or in-person client advisory work more often require an office presence.
How do you become a tax attorney?
You become a tax attorney by earning a JD, passing the bar exam in your target state, and focusing your early practice on tax matters through law school clinics, internships, or a first job in a tax group. Many candidates strengthen their credentials with an LLM in Taxation after their JD. Building experience in a specific area, such as corporate tax, estate planning, or tax controversy, helps you compete for specialized roles faster.
Can you get a tax attorney job with little or no experience?
Entry-level tax attorney roles do exist, typically as associates at law firms or junior counsel positions in government agencies like the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Completing a tax law clinic, publishing a tax law note, or passing the CPA exam before or during law school each signal genuine commitment to the practice area and help you stand out when your billable hours are limited.
What does the tax attorney interview process look like?
Most tax attorney interviews begin with a screening call focused on your background and specific tax experience, followed by one or more rounds with practice group members or in-house team leads. You'll typically be asked to walk through a past matter in technical detail, analyze a hypothetical tax issue on the spot, and discuss how you stay current with regulatory changes. Larger firms may also include a writing sample review.
Where can I find and apply to tax attorney jobs?
You can find and apply to tax attorney jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from law firms, corporations, and government agencies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your practice area and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
