Tips for Your Corporate Counsel Job Search
Tailor your resume to in-house work
Outside counsel experience translates, but in-house hiring managers want to see how you managed business risk, not just billable matters. Lead with outcomes like contract volume handled, policies drafted, or litigation avoided, rather than listing practice areas alone.
Highlight your industry-specific legal knowledge
Corporate counsel roles are rarely generic. A fintech company wants someone who knows payment regulations, while a medical device firm wants FDA compliance experience. Match your resume's language directly to the regulatory environment of each employer's industry.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists corporate counsel openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Ask the right questions in your interview
In-house legal interviews often test business judgment, not just doctrine. Ask about how legal is embedded in product or deal decisions, who your primary internal clients are, and how the team is structured. These questions signal that you understand the in-house operating model.
Negotiate for scope, not just compensation
In-house offers often have less room on base pay than law firm offers, but more flexibility on title, reporting structure, and practice scope. Know which matters you want to own and which you want to hand off to outside counsel before your negotiation conversation.
Build a deal sheet or matter list before applying
Hiring managers for corporate counsel roles frequently ask for a representative list of transactions, contracts, or matters you have handled. Prepare a concise one-page document grouped by deal type or practice area so you can share it immediately upon request.
Corporate Counsel Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most corporate counsels?
The companies hiring the most corporate counsels right now include Epic, Amazon, and Jobot, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially active in technology, healthcare, and financial services sectors.
How many corporate counsel jobs are remote?
About 22% of corporate counsel openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible legal roles at the in-house level. Contract review, data privacy counsel, and employment law advisory positions tend to offer the highest share of remote arrangements compared to roles that require frequent on-site collaboration with operations or finance teams.
How do you become a corporate counsel?
You become a corporate counsel by earning a Juris Doctor, passing the bar exam in the state where you plan to practice, and building substantive legal experience, typically in private practice or a prior in-house role. Most employers look for demonstrated expertise in a specific practice area such as commercial contracts, employment law, or regulatory compliance before making an in-house hire. Lateral moves from law firms into industry are the most common path.
Can you get a corporate counsel job with little experience?
Yes, some companies hire attorneys with limited in-house experience, particularly for junior corporate counsel or associate general counsel roles at growth-stage companies. Your strongest asset at that stage is a well-defined specialty, such as privacy law, commercial contracting, or a particular regulated industry, rather than breadth. Clerkships, compliance roles, or regulatory agency experience can substitute for years of private practice when applying to these positions.
What does the corporate counsel interview process look like?
The corporate counsel interview process typically begins with a recruiter or HR screen, followed by a substantive interview with the general counsel or deputy general counsel focused on your practice background and judgment calls. Later rounds often include interviews with business unit leaders who will be your internal clients. Some employers add a writing exercise, such as a contract redline or a legal memo, to assess drafting skill and how you communicate risk to non-lawyers.
Where can I find and apply to corporate counsel jobs?
You can find and apply to corporate counsel jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your practice area, industry background, and preferred location, then apply directly to each position that fits.
