Tips for Your General Counsel Job Search
Tailor your resume to business outcomes
General counsel candidates who list legal wins alongside business impact, such as cost avoided, deals closed, or regulatory penalties prevented, stand out far more than those who list practice areas alone. Quantify wherever the facts support it.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists general counsel openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight your industry-specific legal depth
General counsel roles are rarely interchangeable across industries. A hiring committee in healthtech will screen hard for HIPAA and FDA exposure, while a fintech board wants securities and banking regulatory fluency. Name the specific regulatory frameworks you've worked under.
Position yourself as a business partner first
Cover letters and interviews that frame you purely as a legal risk-mitigator miss the mark. Boards and CEOs hire general counsels who can advise on strategy, not just flag liability. Show one example where your legal judgment shaped a business decision.
Prepare for the board-level presentation round
Many general counsel searches include a presentation to the full board or an audit committee. Prepare a short governance or risk briefing on a real topic relevant to the company's sector. Panels assess whether you can translate legal complexity into board-level language.
Negotiate scope before negotiating compensation
Before compensation talks, clarify reporting structure, budget authority, and whether the role carries officer status. General counsels who join without confirming these terms often find their authority constrained in ways no offer letter ever fixes.
General Counsel Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most general counsels?
The companies hiring the most general counsels right now include Office of the Attorney General, Mass General Brigham, and State of Washington, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be highest at growth-stage companies preparing for an IPO or acquisition and at established enterprises managing complex regulatory environments.
How many general counsel jobs are remote?
About 31% of general counsel openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the senior nature of the role and the expectation of regular executive and board engagement. Sub-areas such as privacy, compliance advisory, and contract management tend to attract the most remote-eligible postings compared to roles requiring courtroom or on-site regulatory presence.
How do you become a general counsel?
You typically start by earning a law degree, passing the bar, and spending several years in a law firm or in-house legal department building depth in a core practice area such as corporate law, litigation, or regulatory compliance. From there, moving into an in-house role as associate general counsel or deputy general counsel gives you the business exposure, management experience, and executive relationships that general counsel searches require.
Can you get hired as a general counsel without prior in-house experience?
It is possible, but you'll need to close the gap another way. Law firm partners with long-standing client relationships and deep industry knowledge do cross into general counsel roles, particularly at smaller or founder-led companies where the legal function is being built from scratch. Demonstrating that you've advised at the board level, managed outside counsel budgets, and engaged directly with regulators on behalf of clients will matter more than your current title.
What does the general counsel interview process look like?
The process usually begins with a screening call from HR or a retained search firm, followed by multiple rounds with the CEO, CFO, and other C-suite stakeholders. A presentation to the board or audit committee is common at later stages. Expect scenario-based questions around a crisis, a regulatory challenge, or an M&A decision, and be ready to discuss how you've structured and led a legal team.
Where can I find and apply to general counsel jobs?
You can find and apply to general counsel jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background and level of experience, then apply directly to each one that fits.
