Tips for Your Remote General Counsel Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote general counsel openings from across the U.S. in one place. Search by role and apply directly to the ones that match your practice area and experience level before postings close.
Show your async legal communication clearly
Remote employers evaluate how well you communicate legal risk in writing. Include examples in your application of executive memos, board updates, or contract summaries you drafted without back-and-forth meetings. Clarity and concision in written work is what hiring teams look for in remote counsel.
Highlight cross-jurisdictional and multi-state work
Remote general counsels often support teams and operations in multiple states. If you have handled employment matters, regulatory compliance, or commercial agreements across different jurisdictions, make that visible in your materials. It signals that you can manage distributed legal complexity independently.
Prepare for asynchronous interview formats
Many remote-first companies use written take-homes, recorded video responses, or multi-stage asynchronous screens before a live interview. Practice writing concise, structured answers to scenario-based legal questions, since remote employers use these formats to assess independent judgment under realistic working conditions.
Demonstrate outside counsel management without oversight
Remote general counsel roles require you to direct outside counsel, manage legal spend, and escalate decisions without a supervising partner nearby. Be specific in interviews about matters where you selected, briefed, and managed external firms on your own, including how you structured updates and controlled costs.
Remote General Counsel Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote general counsel job?
Remote general counsel roles go to candidates who can demonstrate independent legal judgment and strong written communication from day one. Remote-first companies and distributed teams screen heavily for self-direction, because you won't have a colleague down the hall to gut-check decisions. Experience drafting clear, standalone memos and contracts, managing outside counsel without in-person oversight, and advising executives asynchronously gives you a real edge over candidates who have only worked in traditional office environments.
Which companies hire remote general counsels?
Employers currently hiring remote general counsels include Jobot, Oscar Health, and Oscar Health, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first SaaS companies, fintech firms, and distributed healthcare and professional services organizations are among the most consistent sources of remote general counsel openings.
Can you get a remote general counsel job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level general counsel roles are rare and competitive, because employers expect you to operate with significant autonomy from the start. Early-career candidates have the best shot at remote-first startups and growth-stage companies that need their first in-house lawyer. Demonstrating a portfolio of contracts you have negotiated, compliance frameworks you have built, or transactional work you have closed independently matters more than years of service in a traditional firm.
Do you need a degree for remote general counsel jobs?
Usually, yes. A JD and active bar admission are standard requirements for general counsel roles, whether remote or on-site, because you are providing legal advice and signing off on risk decisions. Remote employers do weigh practical results alongside credentials, though: experience handling M&A, employment disputes, regulatory matters, or commercial contracts independently often distinguishes candidates more than the prestige of their law school.
Which industries hire the most remote general counsels?
Remote general counsel roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Staffing & Recruiting, and Insurance, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Those sectors tend to hire general counsels remotely because their teams are already distributed, their legal work is document-heavy and asynchronous, and they operate across multiple states or jurisdictions without a single headquarters.
