Tips for Your Attorney Job Search
Tailor your resume to practice area
Litigation and transactional roles demand different skills on paper. Highlight courtroom experience, motion practice, and trial prep for litigation roles, and emphasize deal closings, contract drafting, and due diligence for corporate or transactional positions.
Flag your bar admissions clearly
List every state where you're admitted to practice, right at the top of your resume. Many employers filter candidates by jurisdiction before reading anything else, so burying your bar admissions in a footnote costs you interviews.
Target openings that match your deal or case volume
Job postings often signal workload through language like 'fast-paced,' 'high-volume,' or 'complex matters.' Match your application materials to that language using concrete examples from your own caseload or transaction history.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists attorney openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for technical legal interview questions
Interviewers for attorney roles routinely ask you to walk through how you'd handle a specific motion, draft a clause, or analyze a fact pattern. Rehearse out loud using real examples from your practice rather than abstract explanations of legal concepts.
Negotiate offer terms beyond base salary
Attorney offers include variables like billable-hour targets, origination credit policies, partnership track timelines, and CLE reimbursement. Ask about each one directly during offer conversations, since these terms affect your day-to-day work and long-term trajectory.
Attorney Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most attorneys?
The companies hiring the most attorneys right now include Epic, Jobot, and Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. In-house legal departments at large corporations and government agencies tend to post the most sustained volume.
How many attorney jobs are remote?
About 31% of attorney openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though availability varies sharply by practice area. In-house contract review, compliance, and certain government roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while litigation and courtroom-heavy roles typically require in-person presence.
How do you become an attorney?
You earn a bachelor's degree, then complete a three-year Juris Doctor program at an accredited law school. After graduation, you sit for the bar exam in the state where you plan to practice and pass the character and fitness review. Most attorneys then enter practice as associates at law firms, in-house legal departments, or government offices.
How do you get hired as an attorney with little or no experience?
Focus on roles specifically posted as entry-level associate or staff attorney positions, which expect candidates right out of law school. Strong law review membership, clinic experience, clerkship history, or a well-regarded internship can substitute for years of practice. Writing samples matter as much as your resume at this stage, so submit your sharpest work.
What does the attorney interview process look like?
Most attorney hiring processes start with a screening call from HR or a recruiting coordinator, followed by one or two rounds of substantive interviews with attorneys in the group. You'll often discuss a writing sample or walk through a hypothetical legal scenario. Larger law firms may include a callback interview with multiple partners before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to attorney jobs?
You can find and apply to attorney jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Find the roles that fit your practice area, experience level, and location, then apply directly to each listing.
