Attorney Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a attorney job in San Francisco?
Focus on the sectors that dominate San Francisco's legal market: technology companies in SoMa and Mission Bay, financial institutions in the Financial District, and life sciences firms in Mission Bay and the broader Bay Area biotech corridor. Large law firms on Market Street and in the Financial District hire regularly for corporate, securities, and intellectual property work. Candidates with big-law experience, tech-sector exposure, or California Bar admission plus a specialty in IP or regulatory law have a clear edge here.
Which companies hire attorneys in San Francisco?
Employers hiring attorneys in San Francisco right now include City and County of San Francisco, Cooley LLP, and Open Door Legal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The city's mix of global law firms, major tech companies, financial institutions, and venture-backed startups makes it one of the most varied legal hiring markets in the country.
Are there remote attorney jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the practice area. Transactional, compliance, and contract roles tend to allow remote or hybrid arrangements more readily than litigation or courtroom work. About 42% of attorney openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broader flexibility among tech employers and in-house legal teams in the region. Roles at San Francisco-based tech companies are among the most likely to offer hybrid schedules.
How can I get a attorney job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is landing a position at a mid-size law firm or an in-house legal team at a startup, where associates often carry broader responsibility early on than at larger firms. Clerkship experience with federal or state courts in the Northern District or San Francisco Superior Court is highly valued locally. Entry-level contract attorney roles at legal staffing agencies headquartered in the Financial District also provide a practical way into the market while building California-specific experience.
Which industries hire the most attorneys in San Francisco?
San Francisco attorney roles concentrate in Law & Legal Services, Consulting & Professional Services, and Government & Public Sector, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The city's role as a global hub for technology, venture capital, and financial services drives persistent demand for attorneys with expertise in IP, securities, regulatory compliance, and M&A work.
