Real Estate Attorney Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a real estate attorney in California?
To become a real estate attorney in California, you must earn a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school, pass the California Bar Examination, and be admitted to the State Bar of California, which is administered by the State Bar of California. After admission, most attorneys enter the real estate practice group at a law firm or in-house legal department, where they develop transactional experience in areas such as commercial leasing, acquisitions, and land use.
Which companies hire real estate attorneys in California?
Employers hiring real estate attorneys in California right now include Hanson Bridgett LLP, Ascendion, and City and County of San Francisco, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's volume of commercial development, institutional investment activity, and complex land use entitlement work means both large law firms and major real estate companies maintain active in-house legal teams across the state.
Which California cities have the most real estate attorney jobs?
Los Angeles and San Francisco have the most real estate attorney openings in California. Los Angeles drives the largest share of demand due to its concentration of commercial developers, entertainment real estate, and large law firms with dedicated real estate practices, while San Francisco and San Diego attract openings tied to tech campus deals, life sciences facilities, and coastal development projects.
Are there remote real estate attorney jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely advisory legal roles, since real estate attorneys frequently need to attend closings, site visits, and local government hearings. About 80% of real estate attorney openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and when remote work is available, it tends to apply most to document review, lease drafting, and due diligence phases rather than entitlement or closing work.
How can I get hired as a real estate attorney in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a California law firm as a first- or second-year associate in a real estate or land use group, where junior attorneys learn transactional work under supervision. Large California firms such as Allen Matkins and Sheppard Mullin regularly hire new State Bar admittees into associate programs. Candidates with experience as a paralegal or title officer at a California title company, or who clerked for a California land use judge, have a concrete edge when applying for entry-level attorney roles.
Where can I find and apply to real estate attorney jobs in California?
You can find and apply to real estate attorney jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and practice area focus, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
