Tips for Your Right of Way Agent Job Search
Tailor your resume to project type
Utilities, pipeline, and transportation projects each have distinct documentation, negotiation, and regulatory requirements. Specify in your resume which project types you've supported, highway widening, transmission line easements, or fiber deployment, so hiring managers see relevant experience immediately.
List certifications and state licenses prominently
SR/WA designation from the International Right of Way Association and any state real estate licenses are often listed as preferred or required. Put these near the top of your resume rather than burying them in a credentials section at the bottom.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists right of way agent openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Search using project-specific language
Postings often use terms like 'ROW agent,' 'land agent,' or 'land rights specialist' interchangeably. Search all common variants to avoid missing openings that match your background but use different terminology than you expect.
Prepare negotiation examples before your interview
Interviewers routinely ask how you handled an uncooperative landowner or a deal that stalled. Walk in with a specific example that shows how you reached agreement, quantify the acreage, timeline, or compensation outcome if you can recall the details accurately.
Follow up after field assignments end
Right of way work is often project-based, so reconnecting with project managers and agency contacts when a contract closes keeps you visible for the next phase or a referral to a similar project with another employer.
Right of Way Agent Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most right of way agents?
The companies hiring the most right of way agents right now include HDR, American Electric Power, and Audubon Companies, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Utility and pipeline companies tend to post the highest volume of openings during active infrastructure project phases.
How many right of way agent jobs are remote?
About 21% of right of way agent openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field-heavy nature of most acquisition work. Document review, title research, and project coordination roles are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements, while field negotiation and survey roles almost always require on-site presence.
How do you become a right of way agent?
Start by earning a degree in real estate, business administration, or a related field, then gain early experience in property acquisition, land surveying, or title research. Pursuing SR/WA coursework through the International Right of Way Association builds specialized credentials employers recognize. Obtaining a state real estate license and working on infrastructure or utility projects deepens your practical negotiation and documentation skills over time.
Can you get hired as a right of way agent with little experience?
Yes, entry-level right of way agent roles exist, particularly with utilities and government agencies that hire project assistants or junior agents to support documentation and landowner outreach. Relevant experience in real estate, paralegal work, or land-use planning transfers well. Completing introductory courses through the International Right of Way Association signals commitment to the field and helps compensate for limited direct experience.
What does the right of way agent interview process look like?
Most processes start with a phone or video screen focused on your acquisition and negotiation background, followed by one or two in-person or video interviews. Expect scenario-based questions about how you handled difficult landowners or tight project deadlines. Some employers add a written exercise reviewing a sample easement agreement or requiring you to outline a negotiation approach for a hypothetical parcel.
Where can I find and apply to right of way agent jobs?
You can find and apply to right of way agent jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and location preference, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
