Overview:
Provides technical underwriting assistance and administrative support to underwriting team for assigned territories while adhering to Selective’s guidelines and standards. Under technical and moderate direction, this position supports the daily service demands of our agents and underwriting team and requires a thorough understanding of underwriting system transactions, state specific lines of business and system error correction. Under direct supervision, this position works within a letter of authority issued by the underwriting supervisor. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements as well as meet our service and quality level standards.
Responsibilities:
- Gather, analyze and evaluate risk exposure using available resources (e.g. application, survey reports, Inspection Reports, MVR’s, loss history, eSelect systems, industry publications such as SAGE, IRMI, FC&S and A.M Best, Knowledge Management and other information pertaining to business initiatives, etc.) and apply and document results according to our Quality Assurance standards.
- Respond to all inquiries in a timely manner and making policy adjustments based upon granted authority level. Take necessary measures to obtain information needed to finalize inquiries/transactions.
- Ensures the timely renewal and adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification and accuracy of data entry. Meets and exceeds underwriting standards relative to data accuracy and processing times.
- Processes or assists in the processing of new business, renewal policies, endorsements, cancellations, reinstatements, report ordering/interpreting, and correspondence. Includes reviewing and updating policies as a result of additional reports; property.
- Work within specific authority level to quote, accept, decline, modify and renew in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines. Refer all outside of authority to the appropriate level.
- Apply knowledge and understanding of coverage forms, rating plans, and guidelines.
- Provide guidance to Agents and other departments regarding various underwriting information. Effectively communicate with agents. Reinforce the ease of doing business with Selective by meeting or exceeding agent expectations and service quality on a consistent basis.
- Ensures and maintains effective service and communications with agents through telephone and written correspondences.
- Handle incoming correspondence from agents and in some cases customers responding to inquiries on coverage, and making adjustments to policy information based upon prescribed authority level. Conduct outbound correspondence and follow-up work to agents.
- This role will be primarily remote until our new office location is open in Short Hills, NJ, and from there it will be a hybrid schedule. Candidate must be open to commuting to Branchville, NJ, for training period as needed in the meantime.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Requirements:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the usage of all supplied desktop tools, including the automated underwriting system and email.
- Display confidence and a willingness to take ownership of a request or problem.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to see the big picture while responding to changing conditions.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred with 3+ years of filing, data entry, word processing or typing; preferred: College degree or business school 2-4 years; cancellations experience 2-4 years claims experience; 2-4 years inspections experience.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
PAY RANGE:
USD $56,000.00 - USD $75,000.00 /Yr.
