Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Certified Nurse Midwife
Verify your CNM credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification for nurses requires a valid nursing license in the state where you'll practice. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican nursing credentials translate to a U.S.-recognized RN and CNM qualification before applying to any role.
Target hospitals with existing midwifery programs
Birth centers and hospital systems with dedicated midwifery units already understand the CNM scope of practice and are more prepared to structure a qualifying TN job offer than general practices encountering the role for the first time.
Request a specialty occupation support letter early
Ask the employer to draft a support letter confirming your CNM role requires specialized nursing knowledge and a relevant degree. Canadian applicants present this directly at the port of entry, so having it ready before your interview date prevents delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready CNM employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers actively hiring CNMs with TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by visa type surfaces opportunities where hiring teams already understand the filing process, reducing back-and-forth on eligibility questions.
Clarify NCLEX and state licensure timing with HR
Many CNM roles require active state licensure before your start date. Confirm with HR whether an authorization-to-test or temporary license satisfies their hiring requirements, since gaps here can stall an otherwise approved TN petition.
Understand the Mexican TN allocation before accepting offers
Mexico has an annual TN numerical limit, unlike Canada's uncapped access. If you're a Mexican citizen, confirm the filing timeline with your employer so petitions are submitted well before the fiscal year allocation closes.

Find Certified Nurse Midwife JobsCertified Nurse Midwife TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Certified Nurse Midwife role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. CNMs qualify under the USMCA's nurse professional category, provided you hold an active nursing license and your job duties align with the specialty midwifery scope of practice. Your employer's offer letter must confirm the role requires specialized nursing knowledge, not just general patient care responsibilities.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for CNM roles?
The TN visa has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry in one day. H-1B requires a lottery selection that only applies to roughly one in four registrants. For CNMs with a qualifying offer, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. practice.
Where can I find CNM jobs that include TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Certified Nurse Midwife positions where employers are prepared to support TN visa sponsorship. This filters out roles where you'd need to educate HR about the TN process from scratch, which is one of the most common delays CNMs face in the job search.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa while working as a CNM?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the original petition. You'll need a new TN approval for the new employer before starting work. Canadians can process this at the border with updated documentation. Mexican citizens must file with USCIS and wait for approval before the transition.
Do CNMs need CGFNS certification to qualify for TN status?
CGFNS certification is not universally required for TN classification, but some states mandate it for licensure of foreign-educated nurses. If your nursing degree is from Canada or Mexico, check your target state's Board of Nursing requirements before applying, since state licensure is a prerequisite for the TN petition itself.
