Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Urban Planner
Verify your degree meets TN requirements
The TN category for Urban Planners requires a degree in urban planning or a closely related field. A degree in geography or architecture may qualify, but prepare a credential evaluation explaining how your program aligns with U.S. urban planning curricula.
Target employers with planning department infrastructure
Municipal governments, regional planning agencies, and engineering consultancies with dedicated planning divisions are most familiar with TN sponsorship. Federal contractors working on infrastructure projects also regularly hire Urban Planners under TN status.
Search TN-ready Urban Planner roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by TN visa eligibility to surface employers already open to sponsoring Canadian and Mexican professionals. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where the job description and employer history align with TN Urban Planner requirements.
Prepare a detailed support letter before your offer
Your employer's support letter must describe your specific duties, confirm they require urban planning expertise, and reference your qualifying degree. Vague letters citing general project management duties are a common cause of TN refusals at the port of entry.
Clarify professional licensure expectations early
AICP certification is common among U.S. planners but is not a TN requirement. Confirm with your employer whether they expect licensure before hiring, so credential gaps don't surface after an offer is extended and the TN filing is underway.
Understand Mexican nationals face a consular step Canadians skip
If you're a Mexican national, your employer's support letter and your credentials must satisfy a U.S. consular officer, not a CBP officer at the border. Build four to six weeks into your start date timeline to accommodate the consulate appointment and processing.

Find Urban Planner JobsUrban Planner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Urban Planner role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Urban Planner is a named occupation on the USMCA TN profession list. To qualify, you need a degree in urban planning or a closely related field such as regional planning or environmental planning, and your job duties must genuinely require that planning expertise. Roles that are primarily project management with minimal planning analysis can face scrutiny at the port of entry.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Urban Planner positions?
For Canadian and Mexican Urban Planners, TN has clear advantages over H-1B. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadians can activate TN status at a land border or airport without waiting for consular processing. H-1B requires employer sponsorship, a lottery selection, and a multi-month USCIS adjudication. For a qualified Urban Planner from Canada or Mexico, TN is typically faster and more predictable than H-1B.
Can I switch Urban Planner employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. Before starting with a new employer, that employer must obtain a new TN approval for you. Canadians can do this at the port of entry with a new support letter and credentials. Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate. Do not begin work with the new employer before the new TN is approved.
Where can I find Urban Planner jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, which makes it hard to identify employers genuinely open to TN sponsorship. Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles under USMCA visa categories, including Urban Planner positions. You can filter directly for TN-eligible roles without manually screening each employer for sponsorship willingness.
Does the TN visa cover Urban Planners working on contract or consulting projects?
TN status can cover contract and consulting arrangements, but your employer of record must be a U.S. entity that can credibly demonstrate an employer-employee relationship or a genuine service arrangement. Self-employment and independent contracting where you are your own employer do not qualify for TN status. If you work through a staffing agency or planning consultancy as the sponsoring employer, the arrangement may qualify depending on how the relationship is structured.
