INTRODUCTION
Twist Bioscience is expanding our protein capabilities to support a growing portfolio of products. We're looking for a Protein Scientist with strong technical skills, hands-on experience in protein characterization techniques, as well as a passion for troubleshooting sample problems that arise in a manufacturing environment. The primary focus of this role will be affinity and kinetics measurements of antibody/antigen interactions using SPR. As a member of the IgG Production team, you will perform and analyze antibody binding and other characterization assays, adjusting your approach to accommodate nonstandard requests as needed. You will also be expected to assist manufacturing associates in troubleshooting experiment issues as they arise. You will collaborate with our subject matter experts located in Twist’s San Francisco and Boston labs to ensure assay alignment between the sites. You will also be required to troubleshoot challenges that arise in manufacturing settings as the subject matter expert at Twist Wilsonville. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform and analyze affinity and kinetics measurements of antibodies produced in our high-throughput production facility
- Implement and troubleshoot workflows for biophysical and functional characterization of IgG and VHH, including analytical SEC, DLS, DSF, HIC, and additional downstream assays as needed
- Serve as technical lead for protein characterization and help train and assist manufacturing assistants with execution of assays
- Author technical documents, protocols, training guides, and validation reports to ensure smooth process implementation and knowledge transfer
- Analyze complex experimental datasets and contribute to data-driven troubleshooting and continuous process improvement
- Collaborate in cross-functional project teams representing protein characterization in core team meetings and contributing to strategic decisions
- Document work in electronic lab notebooks and communicate results to stakeholders clearly and regularly
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in Protein Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, or M.S. with 2–5 years of relevant industry experience
- Strong hands-on experience in protein purification and characterization techniques
- Experience characterizing affinity/kinetics (KD, ka, kd) of protein/target interactions using SPR or BLI
- Familiarity with biophysical methods for antibody developability such as SEC, DLS, DSF, HIC, ac-sins, enzymatic activity assays, among others
- Background in protein chemistry and experience characterizing antibodies is strongly preferred
- Excellent problem-solving skills, scientific judgment, and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment
- Ability to troubleshoot, train, and mentor others in experimental workflows and data interpretation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment
- Work cross-functionally within and across the department effectively as a team player
- Excellent problem-solving capabilities
- Programming experience (ideally SQL, JSON, or Python) for manipulating and analyzing large datasets
- Familiarity with various sequencing platforms such as Illumina NGS
- Experience with various high-throughput automation platforms
